you could use gordian knot to rip the vob down into manageable sizes before you encode

I managed to get a 6gb Aliens Vob file down to just over 300mb when encoded for the PSP

Aside from IC2 and 3GP, are there any other encoders that can do the job? I have to admit that I am disappointed with movie playback so far on encodes using QB4/29.97/64kbps.

      * Terrible artefacts on mostly static screens (movement is fine, excellent in fact - presumably because bitrate is being ramped up)
      * Some awful smearing artefacts on the PSP screen, black and yellow trails seem to left behind

The still screen artefacts can surely be sorted out with a different encoder, or by moving to QB3 and putting a bitrate cap on high-motion scenes.

I might be wrong but the smearing seems much worse on encodes derived from R1 DVDs, so I'm wondering whether 3GP has problems with the NTSC pulldown effect. Some Avisynth pre-processing might help, perhaps.

There are none of these issues on the Ridge Racer videos in-game, so I'm guessing that it's either a source, encoder or playback issue.

I'd recommend taking a look at The Bourne Identity R1 - it's 360mb on a QB4 encode, which is ridiculously low for a two hour movie... but definitely shows up the two big problems I have with PSP playback.

Hmmm...I'm sure I managed to extract single episodes. Are you trying to rip from the original single DVDs or the 3 disc box set?

          Original single DVDs.

Ahhh, I tried ripping the boxset, they must have changed the setup on the disc.

getting an annoying problem with the 3GP software:

can't be fixed by resizing or anything I can think off, so I can't change it to english. Any ideas?

                run setup.exe

Hit tab 4 times, hit the right cursor (arrow) key

Now select Customised: MP4, for PSP, or Customised: MP4, for PSP (Direct, renamed)

                Hit tab twice, press enter

You could just open up the 3GP_converter.ini and change "language=0" to a 1.

yeah, did that ini thing, seems to be working alright now

was just wondering, does anyone use any of the cutomised ini files here:

or are the default ones with the program good enough?
note: the customised ini file at the link has fps at 20 or 30. Ive read that only 15 and 29.97 fps works properly without synch problems, anyone care to verify?

I've got three seasons of Smallville all on DVD and i can't get them to my PC, tried dragging and dropping the .vobs but nothing happens, desktop goes blank and the files are invalid...

I really don't suppose anyone here has these DVDs, and would fancy ripping and converting them all for me, will pay nicely for your time?

I tried some of the options in his .ini (the standard one with 6 items) but none worked for me. I changed the frame rate to 29.97 from 30, but my PSP still displayed the file as incompatible data. There might be some other settings that need tweaking to create compatible files, but I'm no expert with codecs...

Has anybody managed to create movies of a superior quality than this one in the regular .ini? --

                          QVGA/29.97fps/1500kbps Stereo/128kbps

I've yet to experiment with 'Transcoding_PSP_Mod.ini' that Dazzla posted, so do any of the 2 pass options in there create movies of a comparable quality to the one above, but with better (smaller) file sizes?

Also, has anybody been able to incorporate subtitles into an MP4 created using 3GP? I've been trying to encode some Ghibli movies with the Japanese track and English subs, but the subs don't come out. I made sure to check the sub track along with the audio and video tracks in the DVD Dycrypter 'stream processing' tab when ripping the DVD, but it seems that 3GP won't burn them into the movie file...

There's no way I can cope with an English dub!

The only way to get subs currently is to burn them into the AVI before 3gpp'ing it.

I use Auto Gordian Knot, just because its easy. Load the VOB into it, select what language and what subtitle stream you want, click an output size (2CD is default and OK), and go.

Its slow though, and you'll need to re-encode using 3gpp afterwards. You can batch jobs up, so I get a bunch of subbed stuff ripped and leave AutoGK overnight to do the subs. Then the next day I drag those onto 3gpp. (which you can also queue up by dragging stuff onto)

I had this problem with patlabor TV (and I wanted subs too, which dvd decrypter doesn't like if you pick out individual episodes)

Easiest way in the end is DVD decrypt the entire DVD with all episodes, then rip each episode out using avidub. You can mark the start and end and save that as an AVI. Then move along. Doesn't take long to do a DVD. Then just drag all your AVIs onto 3gpp and let them queue up and encode.
