    dead pixel DS

whats going on with the replacements over here? am i going to have to send it back to nintendo japan or lik-sang? or just wait till europe release?

or did no one else get any?

I believe neither LikSang or PlayAsia were doing replacements for faulty pixels, but I could be wrong. VG+ were checking them before they sent out theirs, so you didn't have anything to worry about there. If you've got a faulty DS, you're going to have to wait until it's out here to try and get it replaced if you don't fancy sending it abroad (as a mate of mine has already asked Nintendo Europe about it).

Just do what I'll probabily do - sell your DS on eBay a week or 2 before PAL release, then pick up a 'PAL' machine. Chances are you won't lose any money.

Nintendo Europe wont repair "import" units as the guarantee doesnt cover them.

It is also unknown at this stage as to the policy on dead pixels in the european guarantee. My guess is the policy will be the same as in America...who knows.

The bottom line is if you have imported and have dead pixels that are bugging you, you will have to wait for the European launch of the machine and PAY for the repair (if this repair is even offered) Japanese systems are not covered for the dead pixel problem as this is a common thing with LCD screens in Japan apparenty.

Needless to say, I think it a poor show from Play-Asia that this isnt highlighted on their website considering the amount of trade they get from these boards.

Well the European ones are likely to have been made in China as well, so most likely whatever unit you send them to be repaired, they won't know where it came from to begin with.

I presume they have a code indicating which region they were bought.

Mine has two dead pixels on the bottom screen, and was bought from Play-Asia. I was pissed off at the time, but It doesnt bother me much now, just the fact that the problem was not outlined by Play-Asia, and still isnt.

I will probably get it fixed though if this service is offered at the Nintendo Service Center in Europe, and the price is right.

I think the label might give that away. Since Nintendo actively promote muti continent gamage I doubt it'll be an issue.

A certain amount of dead pixels are deemed 'acceptable' on TFT monitors - most computer shops have a reference chart of how many a screen can have before they have to do anything about them. I can see how it could be very annoying though, on on screens as small as the DS'.

This is Play-Asia's stance on the subject........

                      Thank you for contacting Play-Asia.com

I am very sorry to hear about your problem. I want to let you know, first, that this is not a fault. Even after years of production, LCD displays are still suffering from the dead pixel problem.

Technically, as a general rule of thumb, an LCD is regarded faulty, when at least 3 pixels are affected, in an area, occupying less than 25% of the screen size. Ie, if you have up to 3 faulty pixels that are spread all over the screen, it is not regarded as faulty. This is the technical aspect.

I do very well know that it is an annoyance to receive a unit that has a flaw in this way, though. In many cases, however, the flaw is only visible when examining the unit, it will not decrease playability and/or the fun factor at all.

At this point, I would recommend using the device for a while, if either the problem disappears or you find out you really are not bothered by the faulty pixel. I want to stress, that especially for the Japanese units, manufacturers give no compensation for these faults. Any problem thereof, which forces us to replace the unit, will need to rise the price of the unit in our shop.

Please kindly take my consideration and report back after around 2 weeks to let us know if it improved.

If you have any further question, please do not hesitate to ask.

                        And Nintendo Europe....

Dear Customer, thank you for your e-mail.

It would not be covered by the European warranty I'm afraid so if we could help you, it would most likely be chargeable.

                        Kind regards,

                        Your Nintendo Team

I had a dead pixel on the top screen of my DS from VG+. I sent it back to them and they replaced it within a week. They paid for postage cost too.

Is VG+ an American Games shop?

Whats stopping you from buying a Pal one on release from Game and swopping it with your old one and taking the faulty one back?

I'm sure game will do a swop there and then.

Just remember not to give your proper addy details

I did something similar with my DC when it packed up.
I went into gashconverters and bought one of their 2nd hand DC's swopped it with me buggered one, took it back telling them little Johnny was very upset/don't you test these consoles proprerly?

                              Et voila free DC.
