    Looking at getting an X-Box

For a while now I've been hooking up my PC to my big TV downstairs whenever I want to watch episodes of shows(DivX, xVid), and I've been looking at getting one of those DVD players that plays these files. I then thought that it may be possible to hook an X-Box up in this way, which would be cool because I've been tempted to get one for a while anyway.

    So... a few questions:-

    Is this at all possible?
Would I need to get it chipped in order to do this?
What size H/D does an X-Box have 'out of the box'?
Does the machine need to be chipped in order to fit a new H/D?
Can I hook up my broadband router and share files with my PC?
If I need to get it chipped, how much does this cost?
Would I be better getting a second hand X-Box and then chipping it?
Or shall I buy one 'pre-chipped'?

If it's possible to watch DivX/xVid files with a vanilla machine, then that would be preferable, but ideally I'd like to get it all networked up with my PC. Just looking at what options I have really.

    Cheers guys.

1.yes you would need a chiped xbox to do this
2.out the box the xbox's HD is 8 or 10 GB
3.You dont need it to be chipped to fit a new HD (but it would be pointless to do so)
    4. Hooking up your router would be no problem Ethernet port on the back of the Xbox.
5.Chipping is fairly cheap, or very easy to do yourself as the chips a solderless.
6.Its not possible to watch DivX/xVid files with a vanilla machine is not possible as you need to load a special player onto the xbox.

I'd buy one sencond hand and chip it If I were you, seems the best option.

To throw a spanner in the works here W H Smiths are currently selling a skyworth DivX player for ?30

Xbox Live will ban you if it detects a new hard drive, The chips cost about ?30, but you need to add a new hard disk for files/progs as the existing one will fill up very quickly.

I was having the same dilemma until I brough the dvd player now I want to chip the xbox but can't deside if the emulators etc are worth losing live for.

There is a very highly regarded chap on the rllmuk trading forum Yod@ who knows everything . Hope the mods don't mind me refering too another forum.

        Cheers for the help guys...

Tony... I visit the rllmuk forum quite a bit so I'll take a look on there too. I was tempted by the WHsmith DVD player but it was out of stock last time I looked. At the moment, I'm not too fussed about Live, so if it's going to be easy for me to fit a H/D and chip at a reasonable price then I'll look at that option.

Regarding networking... can I set up shared folders on the H/D that I can access from my PC if they're both networked? If thats the case, I may not even need a bigger H/D for the X-Box as I can just shift files around via my PC. Or is the network functionality just for getting connected to Live?

        Cheers!

www.xbox-scene.com gives loads of Xbox info on chipping etc etc, but might take a while to trawl through all the pages

Just to throw some extra comments into the topic, I use my XBox to view all my media files... and all my media files are on my PC. They stream over network fine, so you don't really need a bigger HardDrive unless you *need* the media files on your XBox.
Xbox Media Centre just accesses any drives or directories you have shared on your network. Most emulators require a little more work to access your shares, but XBMC automatically finds them!

If you wanna go on the cheap, most mod places will sell a package of the Xecuter 2.6 and the Xaptor solderless adaptor. This is significantly cheaper than newer modchips (such as the Xecuter 3 and Xenium Ice), and runs everything fine.
If you have a 2004 XBox though, you most likely have a v1.6 machine.... the only solderless solution for this model is the Spiderchip.

As for those DivX DVD Players.... Asda have some for 49.99. I know that, I work there =P

My advice.... buy a used XBox, try and make is a 2003 or earlier machine... and buy an Xecuter 2.6+Xaptor package. I installed this, so I'm sure you can =P

Having a mod chip and a larger hard drive does not = ban since it's still possible to play Live providing you've done everything right. Lots of people have confirmed this on xbox-scene.com. Considering also you're going to get a brand new xbox that has never been near Live makes it perfectly possible to use Live if you do everything right.

From what I gather, MS recently updated their banning system so that if you have a different HardDrive to when you first registered onto Live, they ban you. Course, way around this is to install a new HardDrive prior to getting Live.
Or just network non-essentials like movies and roms.
