    Turning back to PC gaming?

After an initial period where I spent all my gamesplaying time online, I got fed up and went back to pretty much 100% console gaming which Ive been into the last few years. But since buying a new gfx card (Radeon X800) and upgrading my PC I think im getting the PC love back. Games Ive played this year like Doom 3 and Half Life 2 have both been incredible, and very satisfying gaming experiences. I just completed Riddick on the PC and found it far more enjoyable than the Xbox version, whilst Far Cry has so far been jaw-dropping, Ive not seen a gaming environment like it before and the AI is amazing. I think these things go round in circles, no doubt Ill find the time for console games again, and I really doubt Ill get back into online gaming again, but for now I just wanted to say how much Im enjoying gaming on the PC once again and how much a new PC and gfx card can give it a new lease of life.

tbh, they can exist in complete harmony, I'm not sure why folk give up on one or the other. With all the consoles and a PC sitting there, just aportion your time to whatever currently happens to have a game which takes your fancy. As it happens, I've barely played any PC games seriously for months now, as I'm waiting for an MMO to start next month. Twas a good opportunity to catch up with things I've missed; brother just bought me Halo2, for example.

Course, it gets a bit tricky long-term when your PC turns pants, but I'm quite happily getting by on what is a very average 9800pro system, the original guts of which are 2 years old.

I've always had both (PC and consoles) and I suspect I always will. There are game experiences only really available on the PC and the same goes for consoles. Two good examples being Rome: Total War and EyeToy - which really I can't see myself playing on the other format even if possible.

And while PC gaming isn't that cheap its not *that* expensive compared to some hobbies.

I generally build myself a new ninja PC every 2 to 3 years spending about a 1000 and usually selling on my old one for a couple of hundred quid. Which if I only gamed I might balk at but as I use it for tonnes of other things doesn't bother me at all.

Marcus - its not that big a surprise that your getting back into PC gaming now. This has been one of the best years for PC games that I can remember. Its really been outstanding.

Im the exact opposite, always was a pc online gamer, now days all i play is console games (especialy xbox live) and doubt I'll ever go back to pc gaming, fed up of the constant upgrading to get the best.

        regards
        Jason

I'm like Marcus, a new computer than can do PC games justice has got me interested in PC gaming again after a year of totally ignoring it.

Heh, and like Ish I build a ninja every 3 years so I'm at the start of a new upgrade cycle.

I don't find myself losing interest in console gaming, well, maybe more console-centric RPGs but otherwise the interest is still there...

I've come back to PCs recently, around the advent of Doom 3, coincidentally. I managed to lump together an extremely decent PC for about ?900, and I reckon I could have done it cheaper if I'd actually built it entirely myself, as opposed to having the bloke in the shop construct one to my spec.

I'd been out of the loop so long, I didn't have the confidence to construct one myself, but I think I will next time.

It's certainly provided a different experience to what I'm used to. After so many years playing twitch games, it's been pretty refreshing to be able to get into things like Rome: TW and Nexus: The Jupiter Incident, and X2.

All in all, I think that it's entirely possible (and indeed, necessary) for PCs and consoles to exist side by side. A friend of mine ran me off a copy of PoP: WW, and although it looks absolutely stonking, it just doesn't play as well or as naturally on the PC as it does on consoles. I think it's got something to do with the joypad. If anyone can recommend me a decent PC joypad that doesn't cost the absolute earth, that'd be great.

They all seem to have either ****ty buttons or ****ty analogue sticks.

I'd recommend a Playstation->USB convertor and Dualshock 1/2. As you say, just about all PC pads are ****. You'll probably find one on play.com or ebay.

I can definitely recommend the Play.com USB converter for the PS2 pad. It's only ?6.99, it's completely hassle free and it means you can play PES4, online, the way it should be played.

And GTA:San Andreas. I can't enjoy GTA on consoles!

                      That's still 6 months away, isn't it?

It's worth the wait though. GTA on the PC just seems like the way it should be played, I couldn't get on with the PS2 versions at all... particularly when the game didn't allow me to perform a hit from behind the steering wheel.

just a quick note on controllers for your pc, I find the best solution is a cable to plug an xbox controller S in, they use USB anyway so the cable is more like an adapter than a converter, thus no lag, and you can get drivers for it easily off the net, even use the xbox live headset if you like.

I prefer it to the ds2 on account of the triggers especialy for racing games.

                          edit:

except for pes, i wouldn't play that with anything but a ps2 pad.

is the one I use, although the same site sells versions which can connect up to four xbox pads by a single usb port.
