In my view, 2004 was the year when PCs tore away from consoles, not in terms of game quality, but technical quality. The PC offers an early entry into the next-generation, although the likes of Resident Evil 4 have made me reconsider dismissing being wowed by console technology still.

Virtua Fighter kicked off the 32-bit generation. Super Mario 64 kicked off the 64 bit generation. And Soul Calibur (properly) kicked off the 128-bit generation.

We can forget 'bits' now. Half-Life 2 is the game for me that's kicked us on to the next notch in the ladder.

I think we've already entered the new generation of PC gaming - the likes of Far Cry, Half Life 2 and Rome Total War are all a generation ahead of what come before, at least technically and in scope.

I'll say something. You're going to be extremely lucky to be playing Resident Evil 4 and Half-Life 2, (not to mention all the other top-notch titles you've mentioned), in the space of week. Talk about a gaming glut during the dry spell.
