I'm not interesting in pirateing games or using other stuff with the modchip, I just want to be able to play NTSC games that are much cheaper and come out before the PAL versions. What's the minimum things I need to do? I still have a few PAL games that I would also like to be able play on live, and I want to be able to play NTSC games on live too.

Is there a way to convert my Pal Xbox to NTSC?

be aware that if you want to play games from other regions on live (i.e. original imports) then you'll need to change your xbox's region every time you switch between UK/US/JAP games like this:
turn on chip, run configmagic, unlock hard drive, change region (1=usa, 2=japan, 4=uk), lock hard drive, reboot machine, set video mode using enigmah videomode select (either pal or ntsc, you can usually just leave the machine in ntsc and your pal games will be fine except for a select few pal50-only titles), turn off machine, turn off chip, turn on machine, log onto live
see, it's pretty longwinded, and i haven't seen any programs that do this automatically yet.

once you set the PAL Xbox in NTSC video mode it doesn't matter whether you taken out the chip or not since it will be still in NTSC video mode with all the HDTV feature.
PAL region coding is actually on the game disc, not on Xbox and without the mod chip your Xbox will run only PAL titles in NTSC signals - shouldn't be a problem since more TV in last ten years or so can handle NTSC signal and if you have HDTV it certainly can handle 480p/1080i and 720p if your brand can handle it...
most of PAL titles are 480p compatible for some strange reason when the stock PAL Xbox can't do 480p... o_O;
with XLIVE there's talk it will check your Xbox region setting against its video mode and ban but I've heard few people with the above PAL Xbox in NTSC mode on XLIVE without any problem as long as the mod chip is either turned off or removed completely...
cheers

but once you sorted out HDTV and leave your Xbox at PAL region you can use local release inc. XLIVE... only if you have to have import then you will need to use the chip.
get the chip that can be turned off so you can play on XLIVE with it turned off and off XLIVE use it to run imports.... don't see what's the issue then...???

well i haven't tried any import games on live myself, however i frequently switch between pal and ntsc (i only use one live account) and haven't had any problems yet.
to be honest, configmagic isn't the kind of program to mess about with as it allows changing of certain values that could either a) cause you to get banned from live or worse, b) screwing up your xbox.
also, editing the eeprom (i.e. changing the game region) using configmagic requires you to unlock your hard drive first, then edit the values, then relock it again. if something goes wrong your hard drive will need replacing and this will almost definitely get you banned from live (if the hard drive is changed, this seems to be a major reason for live bans)
evolutionX has a game region option and i'm going to try it now and see if it is a per-session thing (i.e. sets the game region when you play a game, then reverts it back again if you reboot etc) or a permanent change (like switching between pal and ntsc)
