    not necessarily.
get the chip and change your console's region setting to US as well as Video setting to NTSC. Turn off the chip and your Xbox is US Xbox w/ NTSC video...

I'm in the process of building one at the moment after given PAL Xbox motherboard w/ HDD for free. I already have spare Phillips Xbox DVD drive and just sourced the official green crystal case... soon as I find the 240VAC PSU with correct cable and when the chip arrived it's time for my Xbox project...

OK, so which chip and which BIOS allows me to do this?

And Billy how did your EvoX trial go? I found this post from MartyG "I've played on Live with my Xbox set via EvoX's system settings to NTSC and PAL region. When the chip is switched off, the machine then looks like a NTSC or PAL unit. It's very easy, it's just a matter of selecting the region you want in the menu." Which seems to suggest your theory is correct.

Thanks for all your help guys.

i'd say get yourself an xecuter 2 or similar chip. i've got an xecuter 2 lite (the first one, not 2.3 etc) and it's been fine ever since i installed it many moons ago. my view on chips has always been 'if it aint broke dont fix it' (hence my ps2 having a messiah1 still installed). the chip is one thing, but it's the actual bios that gives it it's cool features. i think the xecuter guys have stopped making new bioses for the xecuter 2 range, but i'm not using the latest xecuter 2 bios anyway and i have no problems.

there are aladdin and other ones but i prefer the security of having a physical switch so that i can always see whether the chip is on or off. the aladdin (i think it's the aladdin, may be another chip) switches on or off based on whether you press the power or eject button.

there's also the xecuter 3 which is rather funky but tbh i don't see what the fuss is about unless you're seriously into whatever extra stuff it can do (lcd screen, etc).

my xbox is used for media center, emulation and live btw.

as for the evox region switching, i'm afraid it doesn't appear to work permanently. besides, if i recall, the setting is tied to the evolutionx 'tsr' (little program that stays in memory) and is really only for compatibility with certain games that will not run unless the xbox's region is set correctly. this leads me to assume that the setting is only to fool whatever software you're running at the time with the chip on.
i just set the xbox to NTSC - North America, and after cold rebooting, configmagic still says region 4 (not region 1)

/me welcomes MD to the real world. The place where people chip Xbox machines to play imports and run Xbox Media Center.

To be fair, Yashiro, 9 times out of 10 Emulation means Piracy, as most people don't own the original ROMs. But there are probably still a lot more people emulating their own ROMs than there are converting their own TV and Film collections over to Xvid in order to avoid switching DVDs...
