    Which 2Mb ISP to get?

My dilemma, would very much appreciate some suggestions:
I've just moved into a new house with no phone line or cable connection and so am in the market for a new ISP. I registered with Bulldog who at first said I could get it, then phoned me up to tell me that I actually couldn't as I was too far away from the exchange. I want a minimum 2Mb unlimited connection - would prefer ADSL as it has a phoneline too, but not overly bothered. Price is the other main issue - maximum ?40 including line rental. Help !

I dunno about your area, but have you seen you can recieve high speed internet through power sockets now.

We must live in the future & stuff.

Have you looked to see if www.ukonline.co.uk can service you? I'm with them, cheap, 2mbit and good customer services.

I did have a look, but it seems you need a phoneline before they'll tell you whether you can get it. Anywhere offering a free phoneline installation would be nice.

If you can't get 2Mb ADSL, they your only option really is NTHell. ?24.99 gets you 2Mb down, 200k up with 1Gb/day limit (which should keep you busy). Big fat hefty discounts if you take their telephone and/or telly packages at the same time.

If they've said you are too far from the exchange (is that for the 2m service?) then it will be the same with everyone else. I'm too far for 2m, but I could probably get 1m. I've got .5
Put your postcode in on adslguide.org

Sorry, to clarify: I'm too far away for the 8Mb service, I just did that adslguide postcode checker and it says, disappointingly, that 1Mb would be the fastest I can get. I've never gone the cable route before, but I could presumably get faster that 1Mb then?

incidently, Ive been with UK Online for four months now, and for some reason am still only on 1 Meg, when I should have 2. Ive emailed them but have had no reason as to why this is the case, I was on BT 1 meg when it was transitioned, and was aware of the 6 week wait to be upgraded to 2 meg, but 4 months is far too long.

Id expect you can get 2 meg, if its enabled on your exchange, which Id guess is the problem I have. If you switch to UKOnline dont expect to immediatly be on 2 meg, dfespite paying for it. The reason I moved from BT was because of the capped downloads, of which UK Online arent capped.

have a look on ntlhome.com and enter your postcode, they'll tell you what's available in your area, also what about Pipex ? (http://www.solo.pipex.com/?source=so...boxpipexportal)

Just checked ntl and it does say 3Mb broadband is available. My understanding is that they cap your downloading though. I'm living with six other people so we're pretty much guaranteed to exceed any given limit. Looks like cable is the way forward though.

NTL aren't enforcing any limits at present, I have a 1mb line with a 3gb monthly limit, and always download at least 3gb a week

Bit more NTL limit info/dicussion here

Hmm..almost certainly going with ntl now. My only concern is that they may start enforcing the limits further down the line. Does anyone know if it's a twelve month contract you're signing up for? I've looked on the website but am struggling to come up with anything

It's only the 1Mb sevice (which you've already said is too slow for you) that has the piddling 3Gb/month limit anyway. 2Mb and 3Mb packages are both 1Gb/day. If you're regularly exceeding even that, then God only knows what you're up to.
