Ah-ha!
Only 3 months on and I've finally solved this (not that I'd been trying all this time but a site that's become a neccesity for me kept crashing and it forced me to find an answer).
Turns out it was Sun Micro's Java cauing problems. A fresh install and everything's tickety boo
Worth keeping in mind if anyone else had any similar problems
