Imagine watching 1080P HD Porn on this TV, it will make you go blind.

Downside if you have Sky you will notice far too many flaws on football

I am interested to hear some news about

HD DVD / Blu Ray / DVD Player Combo (especially Denon)
      1080P Plasma / LCD TVs

Also any ideas when we will get freeview hard disk recorder in High Def as we don't want to keep giving Sky too much money.

I will be going to Bristol Hi Fi Show on February 23rd 2007 and it will be interesting to see hi def stuff.

Sony just announced their new KDL-70XBR3 70" 1080p TV. I know it's Sony, but that has a price tag of $33,000!

I wonder what a 103" LCD will cost!

The 103" Panasonic Plasma is demoing in John Lewis in London. A friend saw it and said it was sex and had the best picture he had ever seen (he could have been exaggerating, but he does 3D animation and gfx stuff and is struggling to find a screen he wants yet). He said he put his face right up against it and it still looked good, although by this point he probably had his eyes shut and was licking the screen.

Thats a serious amount of wedge for a TV. Have to be honest and say that if I had the money I would still favour a decent 3chip DLP PJ and scaler and would probably still have money left over to buy a 50inch plasma.
That said I think I'll make the trip to JL to have a look see though.

There's no way I could spend that much money on technology that's still improving...

edit: and that's if I HAD the money in the first place

I'm debating whether to get a Toshiba 37WL66Z LCD for ca 12000 NOK (ca ?989) or a Panasonic 42PV60 Plasma for ca 14000 NOK (ca ?1154). As I see it

Plasma: good for regular TV and movies, but fear of burn-in
LCD: good for gaming and hooking up the computer to it (not going to do this much), but not so good for regular TV and the black levels are so-so.

Both models have received praise on the Norwegian version of AV-forums, but if anyone here have played a lot of games on the Pana without trouble maybe that can help me in the plasma-direction.

For those of you with expensive decent LCD HD screens:

Presumably you place the screen at normal sofa viewing height. What happens when you stand up e.g. while playing Wii? For example on my laptop's lcd screen, if you move your head upwards or downwards, the screen goes darker and the colours all change a bit.

It depends. The LG I used to use was superior to the Bravia in terms of viewing angle (very weak black level by comparison though, and no backlight control). There's a thread over at NeoGaf which mentions the strength of certification levels for LCDs have been dropped in several places, which means televisions are being shipped without having to go through as many passes beforehand.

I get this on my Bravia, though its heavily reduced by playing about with the settings and lowering the backlight (something I'd do anyway to increase black level). If you've not had prior experience with LCDs then it probably bother you - due to the colour saturation over Component for example, I barely notice it dead on, or when I'm watching film or television at a distance through my PC over VGA.

I guess my answer is that it's pot luck. Either that or things have changed over the last few months.

As for the Wii - I'd keep your CRT. Some will disagree, but to my mind upscaled 480p on a 1280x720/1366x768/1920x1080 is no competition for a good quality SDTV, interlaced or not.
