In the menu for the Bluray go to the hdmi option and switch between YUV422 and FullRGB and see what happens.

You can also check the setting under your advanced picture menu on the TV, there is a setting for DVI Input, something like that, again you can choose normal and full.
I am sure that the TV should be able to switch this automatically for hdmi, but maybe it is not doing it?

You really want the player to be YUV422 and the TV to be Normal rather than full, as Sky etc. are not full range.

There is also a setting for HDMI content detect as well, in the last menu on the TV, think it is just called SETUP, but check that as well.

Are you routing your sources through an amp btw??
Make sure this is not converting if you are.

Thanks for the suggestions, but this TV has none of those options that are selectable anywhere on the set.

My bluray is defaulted as YUV(444 i think), but i read that many tv's dont handle 422 correctly(subsampled)...although i will try it.

Wont change the main culprits though which are sky and the media player, neither have those kind of settings to change.

I seriously doubt the hdmi full range ability of this set, as Xbox 360 via HDMI (expanded mode) looks a right overly dark mess.

I am running through an amp, but the video options are all off, and the TV is exactly the same connected directly.

I guess the most disturbing thing in all this is that all reviews state that true cinema is a fairly decent mode out of the box. A real head scratcher for me.

Have you turned on the advanced options on, on you TV?
            Under setup.

There is definitely a mode for DVI, normal and FULL, but only show when you turn on the advanced options under the SETUP menu.

Advanced(calibration) option is set to 'on' in the setup section.

The options under the picture>advanced are as follows:

              White Balance
              Colour Management
              Gamma
              Int frame creation
              Clear cinema
              Side panel
              16:9 overscan
              Pixel orbiter
              Scrolling bar

Thats it...i have checked the menu from high to low, and i cannot find anything to do with dvi/normal/full unfortunately!?

When you toggle advanced option to off the only options which vanish from the advanced picture tab, are the white bal, colour man, and gamma options.

There is however under 'link settings' in the setup section, an option for HDMI content detection, which is set to AUTO. The only two options are AUTO and OFF.

Maybe that options disappears when it detects an hdmi cable plugged in.

422/444 won't make a difference to this, although other options in the same menu might.

As gizze said, The ST50 can switch to PC levels (full range) some times; the menu option will appear (called "DVI Setting" or something similar) under some conditions. Not always. I'm not sure what you have to do to get that to appear.

When you change levels output on the device, you usually do have to change the settings on the TV to compensate - be it in the form of the aforementioned mythical setting, or by adjusting the black level control (the mislabeled "Brightness").

Can I ask, what TV did you have before this?

                    Panasonic ph10>phd8.

And in the bedroom Samsung C530 40" - cheapy but goodie.
