The Toshiba Regza range offers best bang for your buck imo. Though you may find a neat Panasonic plasma deal after xmas could be worth the wait.

From personal experience id say that the 100hz/200hz debate is not an important one....I use a 50hz LCD and have no problems, at all.

You can leave it on all day on my plasma and if it doesn't go immediately when changing to something else, the screenwipe quickly fixes it. It's not permanent. They have the same ones at work and they leave those on all day with train timetables on them and stuff.

As the complete novice I am, Tesco seem to have a nice Panasonic Plasma stationed right next to a Sammy LCD.......The blacks........It's night and day, and both are showing HD stuffs.......I appreciate proper setup, but it's Tesco.....

In a bright store, the LCD will probably look better in terms of black level, weird as that sounds. PDPs have a glass screen which ends up washing the picture out under bright lighting. The tables are turned when you get the TV home...

well I had the Pioneer PDP-LX5090 and absolutely adored it, unfortunately my house was burgled and those bastards stole it along with a whole bunch of other stuff. Hence I purchased the so-called next best thing - the Panasonic 50V10 and its alright but the Pioneer was in a different league.

Thankfully I have sourced another Pioneer however its 60" instead of the 50" I had before - needless to say the Pioneer is a totally different class to everything else on the market and if you can source its well worth the money.

I'd see if you get on with plasma before splurging Kuro money. I'm glad I didn't.

as I say I had the 5090 and feel it was much better then the 50V10 - your right that the 6090 is damn expensive, but its justified imo of course!

It IS a lot of cash, though, and to be fair I don't really get on with plasma - I can see every little bit of phosphor lag. So If I'd dropped twice as much on a Kuro I'd be very upset indeed.

Oh I see, well thankfulkly im not that sensitive to phosphor and on the basis of black levels and the like theres no screen better then the Kuro (obviously if your sensitive then the black levels and such dont matter!!)

Anephric, did phosphor lag annoy you on the Kuro? I find it almost never noticeable, at least when compared to the Panasonics - but I don't the one I have here for gaming too much.

I only played with a Kuro for 30 mins in a demo, but I could see fringing on that too (I was playing deliberately problematic stuff on it though, like Sin City). I've noticed it on the Sammy plasmas I've seen too (if anything, they were worse than the Panny for it with the added bonus of retention probs too).

I know the Kuro processing's superior, but if the supposed problem with Panny panels is slower than "normal" green phosphor, surely the Kuros are exactly the same for lag?

                        Comment

I don't think they're exactly the same, back when I didn't see a lot of PDP, the lag on the Panasonics stuck out like a sore thumb but the Pioneers were clearly better.

I do know that Panasonic are rethinking something phosphor-related to allow 3D TV, so it might be that the new 3D TVs alleviate the problem even when you're using them for 2D stuff.

Can someone fire off some recommendations for a decent LCD? It's a bewildering sea of choice out there.

I'm looking to pick up a new one for the living room (so mostly for SD TV, Blu-ray and some gaming on the Wii / 360). Budget is (hopefully) under £1000.

                            Thanks

Or, now I think about it, recommendations for a plasma would be great too.

It'd be a lot more mixed use than one I use for gaming, so I wouldn't be too worried about burn in etc as I would otherwise.

Panasonic TX-P42V10, use the THX mode and enjoy near-calibrated levels of picture quality out of the box.

As for burn, there's still panic over this, but I've never seen burn-in on a Plasma that's been run on accurate settings (rather than the comedy "Super Mega Dynamic" modes).
