One last question and it might be a silly one, but if it's not full HD does that mean overscan will automatically be an issue?

For some weird reason, you can often only remove overscan on the Full HD TVs.
There is some pseudo-logic behind it which I would go into but it's a waste of space

I can turn overscan on or off on my TV in the options.

TBH I just dropped the floating blacks in there because I've heard about, but it's not something that's going to affect my decision, nor will I be looking for it either! My Nottingham-based retailer STILL hasn't got the 46" version in (they're doing it with the 5 year warranty), so I may just get it from Amazon and be done with it.

I went with the TX-P37X20B in the end and it arrived this morning.

Very, very pleased with it so far - it achieves a level of fidelity with the images that my LCD would never be able to manage, even if you sat and tweaked it from now until the day you died.

Slightly paranoid about running it in for the first 100-odd hours and what I should be setting it at, but I can see details in trailers that weren't there before - amazing stuff

I use cinema mode to run mine in. If you watch any BBC channels you can get rid of the annoying top right pop up(press red button now messages) by pressing the green button on the remote.

If you have uncharted 2 play the chapter were he wakes up in the mountain village and is walking around. You will smile.....

That's a good point, I think I will give Uncharted 2 a go later on - it's been 7 months now (to the day coincidently) when I last played that. Bet it looks so much different on this set.

How are you finding the near-instantaneous gaming?

They should run a commercial: "Panasonic Plasma TVs - the only TVs that let you AIM in first person shooters!"

I'm thinking of going for the same model. Quick question - did you have much trouble picking it up and moving it around? Whatever panel I get will be directly infront of a projector screen and will have to be moved out the way on movie nights.

It's not too bad - it actually felt a little bit lighter than my old LCD set, but not much. That said I wouldn't want to keep lifting and lumping it up and down as a repetitive task, but I think if you're moving it for the occasional movie night, then you wouldn't have too much bother.

Box says it's 27kg (and that's all in, so probably a tad bit lighter if you stripped off the packaging etc).

Would you believe me if I said I can't tell that much of a difference? Perhaps I will over time though as to be fair I've still not had the time to sit and play with it properly.

I'm more blown away by the fact that I can see everything with such clarity and no more squishing my face up to try and make out the details.

Some of the texturing in the backgrounds on Shenmue for instance, and the jaggies. Looking on eBay, it seems that you can get decent brand (Triniton etc.) 30"+ CRTs for £30~50, but unfortunately they're usually pick-up only. However, I'm sure some of the second hand shops around here might have some.

Anything I should be looking out for? I gather Trinitons usually have 2X RGB-capable Scart ports, which would be ideal if I chose to set the Saturn up too.

Look around for a second hand Loewe CRT. Great build, picture, geometry and sound quality makes other TVs seem feeble. VGA input was an option on a lot of models so it might be just what you are after.

any recommendation please for a 50 inch TV. dont mind lcd or plasma and want excellent picture quality. not looking for 3d at the moment. not got a price in mind but how about ?700 and go from there.

it will be used for gaming and some films only not watching TV. i will need 2 x hdmi and 1 x component as the minimum connections.

thanks Lyris that looks good. one condition is that the TV will need to be placed on a shelf that is 10 inches wide.

would a 50 inch tv fit on such a shelf. my 32 inch tv does at the moment no problem but part of the curved stand overlaps the edge but it is still very sturdy.
