If there's a static image on the screen for any length of time (eg a game's HUD) it'll basically leave an after-image on the screen where it was, so you'll see that HUD overlaid on your TV programmes etc. Image retention is temporary, so it'll fade away eventually. (usually pretty quickly if it's not bad, but can be hours/days if it is)

Are Plasma Screens silent? In short, Yes.
If you can justify the money for the Fujitsu you might want to just go for it, but I don't see them being worth that kind of money, especially with SED, OLED and "Plasma 2.0" coming out in the next year or so which will, according to their claims, make it look rubbish.
I disagree. LCDs are best for gaming and PC use (imo) but that doesn't mean they're bad for TV/Film content. Using the settings I've posted, the Toshiba 37WLT68's colour reproduction is almost perfectly matched to the Rec.709 (HD) colourspace, producing very natural colour.
My colleague bought a new 32" Bravia recently (partly upon my recommendation after reading good reports online) and he is bitterly disappointed, even after changing the settings to those recommended on forums. I'm keeping quiet that I currently think plasmas look much better else he'll kick my arse.

Is image retention different from burn-in?
The guy I demod the plasma screen with said he tried leaving a white square with blue writing on it with a black background on it overnight because Panasonic told him it wasn't in issue any more. It took about 10 seconds to disappear when he turned the source off the next morning. We tried it for 5 mins and it disappeared instantly after that length of time.

People should always take so-called 'recommended settings' with the biggest heap of salt they can possibly hold tbh.

What kind of stuff is he viewing on it? With what connections?
I know some people here aren't too keen on the Bravia's, but most will agree they're definately one of the better ranges of LCD's.
Some will just not like the overall look of scaled stuff on an flat screen TV, and that's sorta understandable tbh.

He's watching normal TV via the built in freeview and a DVD player hooked up using RGB Scart. I have mentioned about upgrading to a DVD player with upscaling and using either component or HDMI, but I think he's had enough spending of money based on recommendations from me.
That said, he wasn't willing to spend time demoing TVs (which is what I first recommended) and just wanted to order one from Empire Direct. So it's his own fault.

I'll be honest, Freeview does look like utter ass :P Even using the Bravia's built-in tuner.
I think many people expecting SD things to actually look hugely better on an LCD or Plasma will be disappointed. They've reached the point where they can look 'nice', but the tech is really a forward-looking thing.

That is not a UK model. I don't know what Toshiba's policy is on this.
For anyone looking to get a new set though, the 42WLT68 is now under £1200 here: http://www.digico.co.uk/model.asp?De...s&ModelID=1314 (a friend sent it after he noticed the price instore, so I guess they're reliable)
As they're a store, John Lewis would probably price-match too...
EDIT: Seems JL don't do the 42, doh.

Just thought I'd make the point as the PH9 screen I saw was said to be a vast improvement over the PHD8s.

That's great.
I think that a proper run in over several hundred hours is equally important.
For a combination of SD and 720p images, I found plasma best in the shop.
Some 10 months later, I am still really really happy with my purchase.
For the future I will look at a 1080p projector (When prices fall) and still honestly think that having a TV that handles SD signals well is very important for the coming 3-5 years.
Even my Gamecube looks amazing on a 43inch plasma....
