Another vote for Fear Effect. Also it's sequel - Fear Effect 2 (natch). If you like Resident Evil, you'll enjoy those two.

I still curse Eidos on a daily basis for cancelling number three!! And Uwe Boll for picking up the film rights!!!

Off the top of my head:

      GTA 1 & 2,
      Resident Evil 2,
      Gran Turismo,
      Metal Gear Solid,
      Kurushi,
      Klonoa.

If you want some FPS action on the cheap pick up Disruptor. I enjoyed it rather a lot.

(and the FMV features some hilarious acting and cardboard backdrops! )

Strider 2 is excellent, a cool new pseudo 3D adventure, plus the original bundled in for free. Nothing to do with the fact I am selling one at the moment.....

Castlevania SOTN (yawn) - yes I know I am about the twentieth person to post on this thread, but it really is a tremendous game, that I never wanted to end.

Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo - unfair, annoying, infuriating, addictive, funny, brilliant

Everybody's Golf is utterly awesome and will keep you going for weeks.

R-Type Delta is a magnificent installment in the series and worth picking up.

Skullmonkeys is limited but impressive and guaranteed to make you laugh.

Gunner's heaven/Rapid Reload is lots of fun

Vib Ribbon will rock your world and send you into a trance once you get going on it.

Point Blank 2 - Virtua Cop and this are the two best lightgun shooters ever made.

Real Bout Fatal Fury - a suprisingly good conversion of a terrific SNK fighter

Darkstalkers - The Night Warriors - to this day my favourite PS1 fighter. A ****ing excellent arcade conversion (only standalone home version, too, folks).

There are some games that will give you a lot of enjoyment for absolute peanuts. Soul Edge/Blade, Silent Bomber, Time Crisis, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Spiderman, Tekken 3, Anna Kournikova's - all can be had for a couple of quid at most, and offer you loads of excellent gameplay.

The Creme de la Creme of PSone for me:

Point Blank - the original and best

Bust-a-Move 2: The Arcade Edition - still the best Puzzle Bobble due to Time Attack mode

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - the peak of a legendary series

              Final Fantasy VII - ditto

Parappa the Rapper - utterly adorable and hilarious

Vandal Hearts - a simpler FF Tactics with great characters

Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo - timeless in two player

Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars - funny, atmospheric adventure with a great plot and characters

Metal Gear Solid - genius action game

              Honourable mentions to:

              Pro Evolution Soccer 2
              Namco Museum Volume 1
              Street Fighter Alpha 2/3
              Bubble Bobble/Rainbow Islands
              Soul Blade (Soul Edge)
              Doom/Final Doom
              The Next Tetris
              Super Pang Collection
              X-Com: Enemy Unknown
              R-Types
              International Superstar Soccer Deluxe
              Metal Slug X
              Resident Evil 2
              Ape Escape

Ditto Vagrant Story - very hard to complete though! I remember when I tried to complete it several years ago, and I couldn't even find a complete gamefaq walkthrough, as everyone had become stuck somewhere along the way. I'm still stuck in the tower with the multiple bosses everywhere.

It all depends on your definition of 'great', but one of my all time favourite games is, er... Bishi Bashi Special ^_^ I just love it! Whenever I'm feeling down it's always able to send me into a manic state of glee with its afro goodness.

                  Oddworld
                  Parappa the Rapper
                  Skull Monkeys
                  Tekken 2
                  Wipeout 2097
Cool Boarders 2 (best snow-boarding game for the PS - looks a little dated now though)

I've given up on Vagrant Story numerous times because I've found it too difficult. Furthest I got is five hours in.

The game has a wonderful atmosphere, and one of the best musical scores I've ever come across... it's also beautifully cut in terms of its progression from scene to scene. Having said that, although the battle system is refreshingly different, I think it's simply over-complicated. The game never eases you into the combat, through staggered tutorials... you're just thrown in at the deep end.

It's a shame really, because I can't help but rave about Vagrant Story's first 15-30 minutes. One of the greatest openings to any game.

If i remember the most frustrating thing about vagrant story was the snow fly forest section

I'm right near the end, which is why it's so frustrating that I can't complete it. And, as in Parappa the Rapper, because part of the game is so reliant on you pressing a button at just the right moment, with the PAL version the timing is ever so slightly off, so it's difficult to get those combos you need. I've had times where I've been fighting bosses for over a solid hour, whacking off +5 hitpoints per turn because that's all I could do.

Ugh, tell me about it! I think I did resort to gamefaqs for that one, only the writer of the guide had limited writing skills and it didn't make one scrap of sense. Think it was a pure fluke I cleared it in the end.

A shame there was no sequel

what about the saturn one? i've got it and it's standalone, in that it's the only game on the cd, if that's what you mean, as opposed to on some collection, like vampire chronicles.

i'm alright with the playstation conversions of capcom fighters, although i don't like marvel vs sf, etc, the ones with the big sprites, as they don't have proper tagging. i love alpha 3 on the ps though. they get a lot of slack for being worse than the saturn ones but they're much cheaper!

i just got a psone, too, and i'm having a riot playing all the stuff i missed (i had a saturn during that time, see). ridge racer's still kicking, as is gran turismo (and gt2, they're both really fast), and soul blade is brilliant, too. just got ff7 after watching advent children.

try and get hold of ridge racer 4 with the 60fps ridge racer 1 remix thingy - it's gorgeous!

I thought that the PS1 recieved the only conversion of Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors (aka Vampire), whereas the Saturn got Vampire Hunter (AKA Darkstalkers 2), and Vampire Saviour.

Vampire Hunter is kind of like a SFII CE to Vampire's SFII, if you get my drift. No other standalone conversion of the first game exists, as far as I am aware. Perhaps it came out on the recent collection on PS2 - I am not sure - perhaps my friend mr eastyy can shed some light on it - although I believe I am correct.

Anyway, enough beat 'em up geekery. Sorry to respond in such a wanky way, billy ; )

I was playing Einhander just the other night, I think it has both brilliant and awful elements to it. The atmosphere and design is superb but any of the parts with the pseudo 3D viewpoint I found infuriating, it really breaks the spell when you're skillfully weaving though loads of bullets only to end up crashing into some stupid structure that looks like background detail. Great game none the less, but Square's inexpience with shooters does hurt it a bit. I believe if they'd kept it fully 2D, keeping the polygonal grpahics if would have been an untouchable shooter.
