TV Picture Not Centre With Games!

I'VE HAD IT. I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!!! MY DAMN TV.

My TV is a little old now, it is the one that I have in my room. It is about 3-4 years old. It is a Goodmans TV, 4:3, and about (Guesstimate) 22" viewable screen. The serial number is: FT88262046. The TV was purcased in the UK, in a Comet, I believe!

I've been to the Goodmans Website: http://www.goodmans.co.uk/, but it is underconstruction and am therefore unable to get any information from there!

I don't know why, but whenever I play any games on it, the picture isn't straight! I've got lot's of consoles set up, some using AV scarts and others using an analogue lead and none of them fit the screen all the time. The only game that will work properly is Mr Driller on the DC, and that is becuase there is an option to align the screen.

For example, Super monkey ball has a Black 0.75" space around the right and bottom of the screen, this means that you can't see the top or left of the screen fully. In Zelda: TWW; there is a good 0.75" black space at the bottom of the screen which means that I can't see what is written above the 'Z' button. This is true in both cases using an RGB lead in 60hz and 50Hz. Although, in Cut Scenes the picture is centred again! In Rez on the DC using an RF lead, there is a black space on the left hand side of the screen, this is in both 50 and 60Hz.

To throw a spanner in the works, when I play an NTSC-USA copy of Metriod Prime, booted using Action Replay, the game looks perfect. The loading screen at the beginning, isn't quite right. But when I am playing the game, everything is good. And whenever I watch a DVD the picture is stright and true!

I have no idea what the problem is, but I want to be able to play games in my room, and am unable to at the moment due to the increasingly infuriating black lines that occur in the games that I play, which really do hinder progression, especially in LoZ:TWW!

Have any of you any ideas what the problem could be and how I can over come it?

    Thanks in advance;

    -Mike

    EDIT: Revised the title!

I had a similar problem with my old TV, Ive just changed to a more fancy one, my 'old' TV wasnt that 'old' so its not really the age of the telly, its the spec. I used to get huge borders top and bottom of the screen with Devil May Cry 2 on the PS2, everything else like DVD films were centered perfectly. I think Screen Centering should be available on all games...DMC2 didnt ft:

Now I have a new telly, I know for sure its not the game at fault, its the quality of the input technology on the AV channels on all tellys. The current range of Sony Tellys (the higher spec ones) have an RGB AV channel centering facility, so if the game dosent, then you can use the one on the telly for any equipment plugged into the RGB socket...hhmmm I wonder how I know that....?

Some people may not agree but I think picture quality with the current generation of videogames is very important as we move further into the cinematic age.

    Any more help, PM me.

To be honest, I was looking for better advice than to buy an expensive, top of the range new telly from Sony.

Considering I have a 4 year old Goodmans TV, I do not have the option you offered as a possible solution.

The problem which you failed to address was that it isn't just games with an RGB input (my GC games) that are effected, it is also older games on an RF lead which have black gaps too...

I also think that the quality of the image is important, and while the picure on the TV isn't quite the best, it is considerably less of a hinderance than the bloody black lines that cover a good couple of inches of the TV.

      Thanks anyway though!

It has been set up incorrectly in the factory, simple as that.

It is a timing issue, if you run a test pattern from a dvd , say star wars, I beleive that has the THX set up patterns, see if everything is centred on that. You may find that it is not but there is so much overscan with tv/dvd that if it is off centre by an inch you wont notice anyway.

I have a projector and with that I can see that the timings change in games between fmv and the game itself, and as it changes the picture shifts around the tube face. This isnt a problem for me as I have complete control and can move it back to the correct postion and save it, so when I get back to that resolution and frequency it is always central.

the actual viewable image within the tube face for games is alot less than the image for films etc. on my screen (72" wide 16:9) with the image size at 100% the image from the ps2 only just fills to the black masking of the screen, with a dvd or tv with the horizontal size at 100% it is around 3" over the edge of the screen either side, and the black border is around 2" so this is why we notice the screen being off centre more iwth games.

Do a search for service menu for your model of tv, and while you are running a game (propably best to pause so it doesnt jump about) you can adjust the position.
But be very careful nit to adjust anything else cause you can fry your set.
This should have been done at the factory but obviously hasnt, and it isnt just cheaper brands, Sony and philips have a tendancy to shift the image up the screen slighty with a 60hz signal too.

        good luck

you can try this but be carful when in there, only change if you see somthing that looks like it is obviously going to do what you want
for example on the tosh service menu there is one called

H Pos which is for horizontal position obviously

          Procedure to enter sevice mode

Switch off tv, hold in VOL+ button on tv and STANDBY button on remote, switch back on at mains switch then release buttons, set will then come on in service mode
Adjust with PROG. + - and VOL + - store with yellow button

A short term solution for your gamecube/zelda.

Go into the options(bootup with no disc) and centre the screen there and save.

The option to align in the GC screen doesn't help with TWW becuase it only aligns left and right, and I need to alter up and down :S

                    Darn!
