Run the network test on the 360 dashboard, it probably has NAT settings at strict.

You using a router by any chance?

        Test reveal Nat = Open

If i eventually connect to something, it then drops out and says something like sorry, users were switched

Except theres nothing to foookin swtich to!

Thats really weird, try disabling any firewalls in your router

The router doesnt have 1 as far as im aware, I dont have to install it or connect to it.
It just splits the IC 4 ways.

Most routers do, you just have to access the routers internal software

usually you type in its IP address into internet explorer

              often 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.1.1

I ran into a similar problem last month with the original Xbox. After using the same gear on Live for over a year, I could no longer connect to one particular friend. This came right after a Live update (they patched Halo 2 for 360).
Both of us had open NATs and could connect to others on our friends lists, but could no longer connect to each other. Something about our routers were no longer compatible with Live. I endured this for a month, then eventually ditched my router and got a new one which solved the problem.

Moral of the story is that you cannot take the 'open' NAT reading as being solid. There is probably something about your hardware that Live simply doesn't like.

Just go somewhere like staples or PC world or argos, buy a router/switch and see if that helps the problem, if it doesn't you can always take it back.
