    Xbox 360 VGA Framerate drop

I've asked this before, but now that a few more people have VGA cables, has anyone noticed a difference in frame rate between VGA at 1360x768 and component at 720p?

I have a Toshiba 37wlt58 LCD, and the picture is to my eyes better in VGA at 1360x768 (sharper, less jaggied and brighter). But, I've always felt that the frame rate was slightly worse. I put this down to my imagination, and have just got on with enjoying my games. But it seems more people are having the same problem:

I found that some games (King Kong in particular) were smoother in component. This even seemed to be the case when I lowered the resolution on the VGA cable... Anyone with a similar experience?

Even better, anyone got any experience of the internals of the 306 that has an explanation?

It seems rather strange that it would happen, as the 360 is supposed to have a dedicated scaler to do the job, so it wouldn't use any extra cpu etc.

I've certainly not noticed anything, but then I've not really used component much.

Could it be the television not handling VGA well? It seems loads of HDTVs do a poor job. (usually blowing things out)

On quake4, during the "Intro" cutscene, there are dead marines & space debris moving from the right to left of the screen.

On my CRT @ 848x480 with VGA & on my LCD @ 1280x1024 with VGA the stuff moves really strangly!

It sort of "Hops" like it's missing frames. Stop start stop start.

Has anyone else noticed this? What is this?

The dedicated scaler in the 360 isn't up to the job of working at the higher resolutions, I have the same frame rate problems as well.

Is the quake4 intro screen a frame rate issue? I'm only running at 848x480! (CRT native VGA)

I get similar issues on intro sequences on a regular RGB CRT, so I don't know if it's got anything to do with VGA. In game stuff is fine, it's just intros that are affected - kind of skipping frames ocassionally.

I was thinking it was only me!

It is odd! Could it be our eyes? Like some people have rainbow effects on DLP projectors?

It is really jerky to my eyes! I have teh same issue on the PC version. But it's smooth "In Game"

              Weird!

You just need to set the resoltion at 1280 x 720 which is a standard 720p resolution and you should have no problems, its all to do with what the 360 can cope with on a technical resolution point.

I have this issue on Quake 4's intro on both PC & Xbox on my Dell flatscreen at 1280x1024 75hz

                  It's 4:3 so I can't change down to 1280x720

I use an XFX 7800GT Extreme Edition card on DVI for PC & I use a Joytec VGA cable for Xbox 360.

I wondered if it was some weird effect like the rainbow thing on DLP's as I have the same problem on both systems running that game.

The xbox is jerky during play, but that's just frame rate issues. But both the PC & Xbox have this odd effect during the intro. Odd.

I've got a test for people with the VGA cable and RR6.

Does the text at the bottom of the World Explorer screen scroll smoothly or jerk along? It jerks for me in all VGA resolutions. In game, the frame rate isn't too bad, but doesn't seem as slick as Ridge usually is.

In component, the writing you talk about moves really smoothly, and freezes/jerks for a split second when the disc is accessing. When i tried it in VGA, it is much more jerky.

I think you have the same problem with your Tosh as i have with my Sony Bravia, in that the scaler for PC resolutions is ****.

Clearly, it might be something to do with the telly. Thing is, I'm running in 1360x768 which should have 1:1 pixel mapping and therefore no TV scaling at all.

In any case, if everyone's telly does it (not saying they do mind), then you can't really blame the tellies if you see what I mean.

Did some more testing. The frame rate is definitely better in component at 720p than VGA in 1360x768 on my telly for:

King Kong (loads better with component -even my other half sitting on the sofa could tell)
Ridge Racer 6 (quite a lot better, and the scrolling text is smooth with component)
                          COD2 (a fair bit better)

In the following games, I can't see much/any difference in frame rate:

PG3 (maybe slight difference, hard to tell)
                          PD0 (no difference)
                          DOA4 (no difference)
Live arcade games, e.g. Geometry Wars (no difference)

My guess is that it is something to do with the 360 rather than something to do with my TV. Otherwise, why would some games have frame rate issues with VGA and others not?

Having used the VGA cable since I got one a week after launch, I'm going back to component -even though the component PQ is noticeably slightly worse.

I dunno to be honest, but I saw VGA (im running through component and to my eyes compo looks better...)

I get this using component on Sharp Aquos. I do not have a VGA cable to test.
