Can anyone recomend me an RPG for any console?

    I HIGHLY reccomend

    Tales Of Symphonia on the Gamecube. This was my favourite RPG this gen. It was so involving an takes an age to complete. Great stuff. If not than i also reccomend:

    Paper Mario on the Gamecube. Another wonderful game. Although not as good as Tales.

        The first half or so of Paper Mario on the GC is superb. It gets a bit boring after that, but the first half is better than most RPGs in recent memory. Zelda GC plus the N64 version is an excellent idea, if you never played them.

        DQ8 is extremely solid, and extremely good.

        If you somehow get a US PS1, there's the excellent DQ7, Xenogears, etc.etc.etc.... lots and lots.

        Personally, I wasn't that fond of KotOR, but a lot of people liked it.

        You could play one of the classic Pokemons. I don't know how good the remakes are, but Fire Red should be decent.

        Here's what you should definitely do if you're inexperienced: Get a SNES emu, and play FF3us, Secret of Mana, Earthbound, Terranigma, Zelda (if you never played it for some reason) and Chrono Trigger in any order. Maybe Earthbound after a few of the others. Anyway, that should take you long enough.

        If you're definitely after something on a console, try some of the GBA re-releases. I believe there are some Dragon Quests and a couple of Final Fantasies.

        Edit: Oh, and DQ5, Star Ocean, Tales Of Phantasia and Bahamut Lagoon.

          Final Fantasy VII - Best RPG in existence.

          Grandia - Funny and enjoyable throughout, maybe the most enjoyable RPG I've ever played.

          Suikoden II - You have to love this. It sells for around ?60-90 on eBay since it's so rare, and it's worth every penny.

          Breath of Fire III - Probably the most simple RPG in my collection. But don't worry; it's also one of the best RPGs I've ever played.

          Skies of Arcadia - The only RPG since the PS1 days that is worthy of being called a classic. I brought my GC just to play this.

          Star Ocean 2 - This is another must have. You'll replay this until the disc breaks.

          Wild Arms - Don't bother with the PS2 remake if you want to experience a true classic.

          Final Fantasy VIII - Square had the hardest job ever in making a game better than FFVII. They came so close to making the best RPG ever.

            Maybe the runt of the litter but Azure Dreams is absolutely brilliant. Graphics-wise, it's scabies. Gameplay-wise, heaven.

              Oh man... Where to start. I've played so many RPG's and I've liked so many of them. Here's what I'd recommend

              Final Fantasy 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10

              Grandia 1,2,3,

              Tales of Symponia, Legendia and Phantasia since these can be found in English. Legendia was recently released for PS2, Symphonia can be found cheap on the GameCube and Phantasia will be released on the GBA in the near future (next month or this). You should play ToP on ZSNES translated though.

              Zelda Zelda Zelda

              Secret of Mana and Secret of Mana "2" whose correct title is Seiken Densetsu 3 and can be found translated for emu. (Both SNES)

              Star Ocean 2 & 3. If you like RPG's you'll play these two "until the disk breaks" (as Aionic says). Not literally but honestly, these games has so much replay value with different two different main characters, various other characters of which you have to choose from, "fun" skills where you forge weapons, items etc. Different difficulty levels. Awesome and really hard boss battles and extra dungeons. You can't go wrong here. Well, of course, the stories in these games are nothing spectacular.

              I never got into the Dragon Quest series but people do vouch for them... Somehow I just didn't like the fact that, in battle, you could only see enemy from the front. Reminded me too much of those PC RPG's for some reason... Dumb. I know.

              Xenogears for PS1. Get this!

                Nice! Lots for me to check out here ^_^, have to start buying them after the DS lite i'm getting on thursday... :|

                I HATED Tales of Symphonia, I didn't like the whole action RPG part of it, couldn't get my head around what i was doing half the time. I've played all of the Zeldas, apart from 4 swords and minish cap(is that any good btw?).I've also played FFVIII (Favourate RPG ever..not that I've played loads of course )and IX+X. I've played Paper mario 2 aswell, didn't finish it because i got bored at the end.

                  Go buy Skies of Arcadia: Legends for the GC. Trust me on this.

                  Tales of Symphonia isn't all that great. The only thing I really liked about it is Kratos.

                  Anyway, thought that I'd add a few more that should be easier to find.

                  Dark Chronicle - My favourite action RPG. You can build towns, run around and explore the towns you build and basically have a blast.

                  Legaia 2: Duel Saga - This is one that you probably won't have heard of since the original had few fans compared to the bigger series. Worth your money.

                  Wild Arms 3 - Not nearly as great as the first. I felt very disappointed with it. But it isn't a bad RPG, it just failed to live up to what I hoped it would.

                  Grandia 2 - Nothing on Grandia 1, but it does have some of the same charm the original has. It's simply too short with only 25-30 hours max.

                  Star Ocean 3 - As ever, SO3 failed to live up to the high standards. What ruined SO3 for me is a very stupid plot twist that made the events of SO2 worthless. Meh... I guess it's fair to say that it's a good RPG apart from that.

                  And in the not so easy to find section...

                  Front Mission 3 - The only strategy RPG I like. I fell in love with this once I got used to it and never looked back. Do you like building mechs, winning hard battles and games with huge depth? get this.

                  Legend of Legaia - I rented this from Blockbuster by chance when they still rented PS1 RPGs. I ended up renting it over and over until I completed it, and even then I didn't want to take it back. I brought a rental copy from eBay around a year later.
                  Legaia isn't the sort of RPG you can appericiate by looking at. Story? far from perfect. What makes Legaia so great is the battle system and gameplay.

                  Suikoden - Suikoden II improved on everything the original did. This is set in the same world as Suikoden II, but neither really have a huge amount to do with each other. If you have money get both, but if you can only afford one you should get Suikoden II.

                  The Legend of Dragoon - Great game, great for people new to RPGs. I remember when people were making petitions to get it a sequel.

                  Breath of Fire IV - You get to play as the good guy and the bad guy. That alone makes this worth your money. :P

                    A second opinion on those that I've played a lot:

                    Front Mission 3 was superb. Definitely overlooked.

                    Legend of Legaia's battle system was quite fun, but everything else about it put me off.

                    Grandia 2 has a fantastic battle system. Definitely one of the best ever. The rest of it's a bit shallow, but the battles are genuinely brilliant.

                    Dark Chronicle/Dark Cloud 2 just didn't do it for me. I really wanted to like it, but I think I was expecting too much - something like an action DQ8, which it definitely isn't. Still, very solidly made.

                    Skies of Arcadia's very very good. Allow a little time to get into it, and the unique atmosphere will latch you to it.

                    Nobody's mentioned Vagrant Story! A really unique RPG from Square. Worth it for those who like to get really stuck into the smaller details.

                      You really do get used to Tales of Symphonia. I hated it at first, and the battles do seem random and chaotic... but after a while, something just 'clicks' and you get it. It's a slow start for sure, but it's a great fun title once you get into it, even if there are better games out there.

                      Any of the Grandia games are a must play, though I really much recommend the original Grandia over the second game. The second game is fine, but vastly inferior to the original. I reckon most players may not really appriciate Grandia II properly if they hadn't played the original first, because it;s a very dull, downbeat entrance to the series.
                      Grandia III on the other hand puts the series back on track.

                      Skies of Arcadia is fantastic, you just can;t compare it to anything because there's no other RPG like it... a unique thing. Just give it time to get going and push through the slow paced start, because once you get into the game and figure out what the game is all about, your hooked till the end. And there's so much to do!

                          Skies of Arcadia and Tales of Symphonia are the 2 I recommend.

                          ToS is superb, it starts of very clich?d but then twists and becomes top notch.

                              Good. Kind of like 1 but smoother and with nicer graphics.

                              PS: Alundra is a good Zelda-style RPG - though it's more an action game than a stat-shuffler.
