Teach me how to play Metal Gear

Hi all this is a weird request but I have a friend at work who loves metal gear and filled me in on the story,
I have to admit after not being interested in the games b4 (mainly because I wasn't a ps1 man), I got the taste for the story.

    I have :

    Metal Gear Solid PSone
Metal Gear Solid The Twin Snakes GC
Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance Xbox

Where do I start and what tips can be put my way ?

    Thanks for any help

Scrap the PS1 version as Twin Snakes is a remake and is alot easier to play.

    Start with Twin Snakes.

Start with MGS on the PSOne. That's the best training you could ask for really as it breaks you in fairly slowly on the stealth side.

Twin Snakes is just a remake of Metal Gear Solid, but has a few revisions in place that make it easier than the original version (such as the tranquiliser gun from MGS2).

MGS 2 is - at risk of simplifying a bloody convoluted game - a massive in-joke about the first game. It's confusing enough as it is; I wouldn't recommend playing them out of sequence.

Other than that, be patient with the gameplay (rush and you'll DIE!) and be prapared to scratch your head a lot at the story.

Twin Snakes definately, the lovely graphics make it alot more tolerable in this day and age, Plus it has added Ninja ass kicking which the original doesn't.

Probably not, although the rumble effects in the MGS games were particuarly good. Maybe not on the GC version as it only has 1 motor in the pad.

Do you not need it for the psycho mantis fight ?

It's Twin Snakes that should be binned. Pointless remake, plus as MattyD says, the gameplay is broken by the inclusion of moves/weapons from MGS2.

Xbox Substance is a mediocre port too. I'd scrap that in favour of the PS2 version. Not just because it's better, but by doing that you can stay with Dualshock controls all through the series instead of having to chop and change between GC/XB/PS controller setups.

You should play them in sequence starting with the PSone game.

I don't think you need it for the actual fight, although he does do something cool with the rumble in a cut scene.

                    TWIN SNAKES!

It is far less clunky than the PSX version :P

Twin Snakes is for pussies! It's a piece of piss because the firstperson aiming doesn't belong in it.

Yep. I'd say do this. Forget the remake/port and just play 'em through on the one system.

I prefered the voice acting in the PSX version. Why they had to redo the entire script for the GC remake, I don't know. The cut scenes were much nicer in Twin Snakes, yes, and it in general did look better, but you shouldn't so easily dismiss the original. The classics die hard, one might say.

Isn't firstperson aiming in MGS4 ? as a newb and someone who can't (in the past) figure out how to play them (or any stealth game for that matter) to start with the easy port ?

                            Oh and I dont own a ps2

No idea. I've only seen a couple of trailers that don't show any gameplay...

FP shooting is in all the other MGS games apart from the PSone original, so starting with the Cube game would be alright.

But, for someone who had played the original, Twin Snakes was a big disappointment. They included FP aiming, but left the enemy placements etc exactly the same as the PSone version, making it a bit unbalanced in your favour.
