    Wii Ethernet connection?

Right want to clear this up - Can I connect an RJ45 to my wii ? I have one which is run into the living room (via the backwall) for my 360 and planned to just swap it over to the wii when I was using it.

Can I ? Or is it wifi only ? I'm sure I read you could use a wired connection ????

it better be wired or im stuffed! does it say anything in the manual thats online?

EDIT: From that thread allyourbase posted this:

Very interesting. I learned that users without a wireless router can use the USB dongle just like with the DS, nice. Now there's no excuse not to let your Mii mingle!
So maybe no wired connection? Will read on.

We'll need a USB 2.0 LAN adaptor for a standard wired connection. I'm not into all this wireless ****e either, I have thousands of cables in my living room - clearing up the single LAN cable by replacing it with Wireless tech is a bit pointless.

        Wii Ethernet connection?

Does anyone know when the Wii ethernet connection will be available? I can't seem to find a release date or price anywhere.

I don't have a router, nor a DS WiFI USB 'dongle'.... which I understand will work with the Wii. I wouldn't mind picking up a DS dongle, but I was wondering about the transfer speeds through that (I have no knowledge of WiFi speeds).

Edit: Apologies, I didn't read this thread before posting... If this one covers the same ground, mods can close/merge this one.

Nintendo say "unofficial adaptors wont work"

Access resources to learn everything you need to know about Wii & Wii mini.

I doubt that will work, will probably need to be the specific nintendo adaptor.

I can imagine so, but i'm not 100% sure. The ones we used looked similar. simply plug the USB into the Wii and have an ethernet socket ready for an RJ45.

gee from the sounds of it Wii online seems to be for the "know how" peeps only. Why couldnt it be plug cable from console to modem?!?

EDIT: Actually from the sounds of this (click USB connection) it sounds quite simple. The question is, will Nintendo release there own USB LAN adapter or does any work? Also sorry to sound dumb but what is a cat-8 connection?

Yeah but remember you've got lots of clever things going on in the background with Windows and automatic driver detection and install. I'd steer clear of any non Nintendo solution until someone tests it because i severely doubt that anything but the proprietary Nintendo solution will work.

yup, these usb-ethernet jiminies all need drivers. afaik there isn't a generic one with windows (correct me if i'm wrong and yours just installed without needing a cd) in which case the Wii would have to have relevant drivers for it already.

i think tony hawks on the ps2 worked with a select few usb-ethernet adapters to play online?

if worst comes to worst (or you don't want to wait for nintendo to start selling their own) you could just buy a cheap wireless access point and plug that into your ethernet cable and let the wii connect to it. sounds silly though, and would need a plug socket, but i'm just throwing up ideas here

so really we are gonna need this

And until this comes out if we have no wireless connection we cannot hop online unless we buy a ds wi-fi dingle yes? If so that balls.

Why would Nintendo not have this at release?

Thats exactly the thing i used! its a shame we cant go online straight away but there's no games to play only a few message boards and the like

Your bottleneck is at your Internet connection, so I wouldn't worry about wifi transfer speeds on your LAN; it'd be an issue if you were streaming hi-def video across your network.

The dongles work fine for DS online play - the only issue is needing to have the PC switched on for it to work.
