So.... what would die if there wasn't enough power from a step down? The Wii? The Wii power supply? The Step down? I've got a 63watt one I want to try...

I *think* it'd be the stepdown that'd die, but don't quote me on that.

Looking at the PSU last night, I think it takes 52W input.

Can I take the credit, then?

It'd be the stepdown that would fry, and you can quote me on that.

Your stepdown is adequate, so stop worrying. You can also check the stepdown for over-heating - since one that is near the limit probably won't burn out immediately, the temperature will be a warning.

        Stroller.

There probably would be. When in JPN mode, the Cube couldn't never read the card with US saves on it, and vice versa. So I reckon you're not going to be able to play Japanese Cube games on a US Wii and expect to use your saves. Under Freeloader it had its own way of formating the memory card so that you could have all regions on it.

I'm guessing so, but are the controllers (wiimote, nunchuck, classic controller) region-free as usual for consoles?

That is can I buy a Jpn nunchuck for my UK PAL wiimote and console?

Yup- region free. They test it on www.play-asia.com.

Will a UK Component cable work okay on a US Wii?

Yep, no reason why it shouldn't.

Memory cards, are they required or does the Wii have some internal saving system?

There's 512MB internal flash memory for game saves and VC downloads.

What's the best way to connect the Wii to my 'normal' CRT TV?
Don't look at me, I'm irrelevant.

Unless it has component input.... RGB SCART

just updated my wii and all went fine. now displays Version 2.0U in the wii systems settings menu Now what should i leave wii connect 24 set too, on or off? not keen on autoupdates without my knowing tbh, or is there any other good reason to leave it on.
