It's MIDI on the PSX too, as it uses the internal synth rather than proper audio tracks. It's just that they were programmed specifically for the console, so you're hearing them as originally intended, whereas on a PC the quality depends on your General MIDI sound set. If you have a good one, it can sound excellent.
