    PS2 to USB Controller Converters

I've seen people mention that CEX seem to be running PS2 controllers on their PS3's in store and was wondering how this is possible.

Is their such a device specifically for the PS3 or are they just using one of those universal PC ones which also works on the PS3.

Would be interested to know as it may save me shelling out so much for the Virtua Fighter stick when I can just get a PS2 one instead.

    Thanks

Universal PC ones according to my main Geezer Aziz. I wonder if you get rumble on PS1/2 games if you use these?

Hmm, not going to be as simple as I thought then. I've got to buy an adapter for the PC anyway, so when that comes I'll see if it does work on the PS3. Might be that it will only work with certain ones?

Tried mine which I have for my PC with a PS1 pad - it sort of worked but the button mappings are a bit messed up. For example, on the F1 demo ( which I thought was decent ) the right analogue stick for brake/accelerate is right/left instead of up/down. Not tried it on a dual shock, but I suspect it'd be the same - won't be a problem if you can define the controls in game.

HEADS UP! I just tried my PS2->USB adapter thats been lying behind my iMac for the last 6 months, and it works a treat! Ive tried it on all my ps3 games, and it works perfectly, which means I wont be needing to buy a sixaxis for a while .

I'm using an official ps2 pad on it, and I bought the adapter off ebay so I havent got a model number or anything for it. It looks like this however....

              Enjoy!!

Excellent, thanks for the help, I've got one that allows me to plug in Saturn, Dreamcast and PS1/2 controllers on the way for my limited PC gaming I do, so if that doesn't work for the PS3 I'll check out the other models mentioned in the thread.

Aren't you going to run into problems? The games will ask you to insert a SIXAXIS controller because it lacks tilt sensing. I play my PSone pad for PS2 alot, but some games require me to have a Dual Shock 2 controller inserted, even if they don't use pressure sensitivity. I imagine the same will happen for PS3. It will want a SIXAXIS when it can't detect one.

well, on games like ridge racer and motorstorm the tilt function isnt required, meaning you can get away with a ps2 pad. And its obviously perfect for playing ps2 games on my ps3, as i was just about to cough up for another 6axis pad for winning eleven 10.

Its not ideal, and i wont be using a ps2 pad as my main pad (who would?) but this has basically saved me £35 on buying a spare pad "just incase" someone comes over for a game. Until the ps3 pads are much cheaper, this will do quite nicely

I understand that, but will the PS3 (game) not get picky when it doesn't detect the official controller you are meant to use? USB dual shock is not an officially recognized controller for the PS3, so it may think there is no controller inserted at all when the game boots.

Well, I can only comment on ridge racer, motorstorm and resistance, but it works just fine from boot up with a ps2 pad.

Tbh, i wouldnt be surprised if any standard USB game pads worked aswell. I plugged my iMac's mouse and keyboard in last night and had a little play online, no problems there either.

do you lose the 'PS' button functionality then? are you even missing much if you do?

spinpug, strange you'd have that issue - does your play.com one require drivers for windows xp? i'd be pretty certain any that do wouldn't work, only the ones that use the built-in usb HID driver that comes with xp (as the ps3 would just have the same sort of driver built-in)

yeah, all the PSButton functionality has been lost with the ps2 controller. The only button it could be is the analog button, but that does exactly what the name suggests. Wont be a problem if your mates are using a ps2 pad and youve got a sixaxis on a multiplayer sesh tho ^_^

As long as the PS3 recognises the controller then it should be fine I would think, might just be difficult to assign player numbers if you're playing with more than two people.
