    Just had an X-Box chipped.....

and am at the first stage. When i have done it myself before with a solderless adaptor (this one was kindly soldered by someone on here) i got a screen that says Cromwell. Please insert CD.

On this one,a PAL model,i just get a blank screen. Would this be because im hooking it up via component, and the HD settings are not there until its properly 'done'?

    Ta.

Possibly, I would of thought that even a pal system could output 480i component without the NTSc settings being enabled.

only very early PAL Xbox can use the YUV cable from what I heard.
Need to locate the Enigmah video elector and change your PAL Xbox to output NTSC signal - it won't change your Xbox region setting just the video output...

I'm pretty sure my Pal Xbox 1.1 can output over component (576i) without skullduggery. It's been a while since I tried it, mind.

plug the yellow RCA plug into your telly's Composite Input and you should be able to see the dashboard in BW. Try to setup the Video setting accordingly...

It was working with an RGB lead so the cromwell version you have is fairly late (xcaliber encoder compatible)
I had to do my first one blind!

So rgb gives me a picture now, which is nice.

However,at this next stage , it happens really quickly, the X-Box shuts down, but then when i boot it up again,i get the same Cromwell screen.

Could it be i am using the wrong thing to put on it? Did have a look about and it seems right.

You could grab the Slayers auto installer - its got bios flashing and dashboard/utilities installation built in

This won't help as cromwell cannot boot unsigned code

Flash enable switch in the right place? Are you doing it through a browser as I found Firefox wouldn't work. IE was OK.
Have you resized the BIOS to 1Mb? If not both banks will not be filled.

Oh,guess this is what i need to do.

How would i go about doing that?

Using Safari, which i'm pretty sure works.

I know you're not going the unsigned way, but for starting out the auto installer is crakin' - download it and burn to a DVD-R. Pop in drive of Xbox, and then (making sure you are using the correct bank on your chip for your xbox version) flash the 'flash enabled' chip with the bios. Reboot and add the OS and other utilities you want - you can lock/unlock the HD using Slayers, as well as many other things...
Just thought it would be easier for someone approaching this for the first time

But i thought Danny i can't use Slayers (which i have) until a BIOS other than Cromwell is on there.

Been doing a bit of research and seems i have to use a program called BIOS manager to make my 256 BIOS into 1meg. Bloody Windows only though.

                            Nick,
I'll send you a resized BIOS this evening.

The auto installer disc I've got has a bios flash utility built in - I had to download the contents, and create a self booting disc from the download (can't remember what bios versions were on it though!) Sadly nearly everything like this is windows biased (other than the linux stuff etc), which sadly after translating snes roms about 6 years ago, forced me to jack in using Mac's (sobs to self) due to compatibilty issues....
Smouty's routes best if he's sending you the file - if not send me a pm and I'll send you the auto disc I've got

*edit* just had a look through some of me old stuff, and found that the auto boot disc I've got is for 1.6v xbox's - I've got a seperate one with bios only for 1.0-1.5's
