Importotaku, where'd you get that glass cabinet that houses all your cool knick knacks from? It's very much the sort of thing I'm after to house some of my collectables.

I got it from littlewoods catalogue but im pretty sure argos & index still sell them.

They come in silver & beech. They are self assembly jobs & a bitch to put up with just 1 person so make sure you have a friend handy. Not cheap either.

Thanks for the info. It's my Birthday in just over a week and I'd been struggling to recommend something to my parents to get me everytime they've asked in the last month!

At least they'll see it as something practical and not more of "those game things".

I'm still in my twenties dammit!!! Don't need apipe and slippers just yet Mother!

Ikea do a few glass cabinets. You could try their Detolf range (£34.90). Try this link or go to Ikea.co.uk > Bookcases & Cabinets > Glass - Door Cabinets.

I love this thread! I keep popping in for ideas. I've bought a house, which I'm in the process of decorating. Obviously, I'm preparing for the BIG telly for some sweet gaming/movie action, so I'm looking for options of television cabinets.

I'll probably get a local carpenter to make me one in the end, but can anybody suggest any good retailers?

I'm after a unit with cupboards at the bottom and one or two comparmentalised shelves above it. Everything I've seen has got either drawers, those mesh doors or no shelves.

No matter how much I'd love it, I can't have a lounge that looks like the Trocadero!

Has anybody got any pics of their "subtle" set-ups?

Some of these cabinets are quite nice:

                  They have hidden telly cabinets.

On a ~slightly~ related note - what's the ideal viewing height for a television? I'm thinking of getting a 36" or 40" plasma eventually.

Thanks for any feedback and keep the setups coming!

Here's what your setup needs to look like if you're 37, Married and have 2 kids. We just had a garage conversion done. We used half the space for a study at the fron of the house and the other half to create a mini-a/v room (Charlie & Lola was on during this shot!):

When they were plastering I had speaker cable embedded in the walls which allowed me surround sound speaker with no cables showing (wall needs painting still!):

                      Here's what's inside the cabinet:

Overall I'm pretty pleased with the setup. There's not much room for Wiimote swinging though!

The style of the sites you linked to are a bit too "much" for me, but your mention of cupboards & shelves does bring to mind the unit I bought recently. Listed at ?350, that vendor accepted ?260 through the eBay "make an offer" system, so I was quite chuffed & got it delivered for ?300. If you want something with shelves above the cupboards you might have to keyword "sideboard", but there's no reason you shouldn't stand a 40" LCD on one of those.

There's obviously somewhere abroad that's manufacturing furniture in large quantities as there are a lot of vendors at the moment offering very similar stuff - they all offer various similar units in various different woods. If you Google "solid oak media unit" then a number of the sponsored results (pine-oakfurniture.co.uk, pinesolutions.co.uk, indigofurniture.co.uk, acaciacollectables.co.uk &c &c) at the top & down the side have very appealing websites, but I think the prices are a bit better on eBay. Each vendor has a different name for their ranges, but if the units aren't identical then they differ in only minor details. Despite being "mass produced" the woods - such as mahogany and mango - seem very nice and (based on my experience) it is very good-quality furniture. I'm very pleased with mine and I think it is quite beautiful - well proportioned, solid & well-made. My mother even complimented it, so I can't be completely deluded!!

I have had two tellies in recent months, a 44" DLP & now a 42" LCD. IMO the ideal height of stand for a TV of this size is 60cm (2 feet) tall. Initially I had the DLP on top of some 3' (90cm) tall shelves that I already had in my living room, but that was waaay too high, IMO. I felt like I was looking up to it all the time, although you do adjust. I started looking at the Ikea stuff but everything I could see there was too low. Basically, with the 60cm (2 feet) high bench my eyes are level with the top quarter of the screen if I sit on the sofa bolt upright, but of course I don't, I tend to slump, so I'm looking ever so slightly up at it - that's absolutely perfect for me. I'd have thought that the centre of the picture would be lower, were you to place a smaller telly on furniture of the same height, so ideally you'd want a taller unit if you're set on a 36" or 40" set. 42" - 44" is perfect for me - I view at a distance of about 8 feet.

                              Thanks, stroller!

Some sage advice there. I appreciate your post. I found a pine place just near me that makes things to order and using your height advice, I'll get them to make me a telly cupboard to be proud of.

It seems like FullSpecWarrior knows where I'm coming from too. You just can't have a lounge that looks pretty much like a student flat when you're not a student!

Although I'd love it, the missus wouldn't be too happy with a Lounge looking like the Game On exhibition.

I've already had to abandon getting an arcade cab to put a dining table in...
