I can't fathom why people are changing out their HDD's for the sake of a usb in the front your giving up nearly unlimited size

Mike - you can save all the PS Store d/ls and install games to HD with a USB drive? What about a Linux install?

If so then installing an internal only makes sense from an asthetics PoV - 3 1/2" external for the win.

You can't run Linux from an external drive or any of the other software that runs via Linux. Any games that you've downloaded will need to run on your internal drive.

Plus, some people don't like 1700 cables sticking out the front of the console connected to various things.

Ive just bought a nice 160 gig external hdd for ?39.99, will lump all my music onto it and some videos etc too. I only have like 10 albums on the hdd atm but i can see already if i want more on its going to hinder my downloading of demos etc also video files from the psn store can be saved onto the external drive too or moved to it after download so it frees up the system hdd from getting clogged up with crap.

Are you able to run demos/downloaded games from the external drive also?

Thinking about going for an 160GB internal now (my 60GB only has 15Gb left!!).

Has anybody bought an enclosure for the included HD to transfer their data across to the upgrade yet? I'm just a little unsure as to what I should be looking for, any recommendations?

                Cheers,

I just got a new 160GB HD and an enclsure, but my PC won't format the drive to FAT32, so I can't backup my old stuff. I need a 10GB drive to do the backup on. Any suggestions?

Don't suppose you've got an iPod or similar? I just use that when I need to transfer large amounts of data.

And the limit for FAT32, I believe, is 20GB, which is why it won't work.

EDIT: 32GB, limited by the OS.

Actually, once you've installed Linux to the internal drive, theres no reason at all why you can't format the USB2 external drive as EXT3, and store applications, files, whatever you want on it.

                              You love it!

Anyhow, all is backed up and working flawlessly. Seriously guys, anyone with a 20GB model, do the HD upgrade as it's well worth it.

                                Definitely!

But as I was trying to point out, any downloaded PSN games would automatically be installed on the internal drive and can't be transferred and/or run from an external drive.

                                I'm fairly sure that's right isn't it?

Running stuff via Linux is a different matter though as it's pretty much a PC if you're looking to run Linux.

Has anybody tried running Quake 3 from the HDD yet? I believe that was Linux compatible? I could be wrong...but something tells me that it ran really well in Linux.
