Theres no nvidia RSX support in the PS3 hypervisor - meaning no hardware accellerated 3D, plus I'm not even sure theres a linux PPC binary, meaning it'd run like a complete dog in software.

Theres a petition to enable RSX hardware under linux, it won't happen though.

It does seem unlikely to happen but it's fairly obvious to see why they did it that way.

I was wondering if anybody has tried it though I'm wondering just how well Cell would handle something like that.

      It's be interesting to know...

Obviously is far better suited for emulation of 2d consoles though, which I believe it does fairly well?

        Satan!

Satan himself has personally put those screws in to the drive caddy.

It took three sets of screwdrivers, a pliers, 30 minutes and the creation of at least half a dozen new swearwords to remove them

Still, apart from needing the arms of Garth and the patience of Mother Teresa, the rest of it was as easy as pie and my PS3 now has a lovely 160Gb capacity

Though I did laugh at the instructions which told me not to tighten the caddy screws too tight when I was putting the new drive in. Definitely a case of do as I say, not do as I do.

See that's strange as when I replaced the HD in mine, all 5 screws came out without any hassle at all and from taking the cover off the PS3 to installing the new drive and puting the cover back on, it must have taken me all of 2 minutes.

Looking around other people have said the same thing, and others have said they couldn't even get them out using pliers

Does seem to be a bit hit and miss.

Like I said, Satan himself must tip toe up and down the production line and tighten them randomly.

              Lol!!!!!

It's like the screws are made of plasticine or something. Did you ruin any of them?

I'm going to be ordering this on Tuesday when I get my wages. My HD only has about 20gb left so I'm really going to be needing one soon when things like Warhawk & SOCOM are released.

What drive did you use in yours Spatial? Anybody used the Toshiba MK1637 that I'm getting?

Mine was a Western Digital 160 gig and was something like ?60 delivered from Dabs.

Didn't totally ruin any of the screws but I did mangle some of the sides of the heads with the pliers. Almost destroyed some of the heads trying to unscrew them but thankfully not enough to stop me being able to tighten them back up in the end.

Like you said, they seem to be made of the worlds softest metal

Sounds good! Dabs are usually very good anyway.

I'm tempted now. Was it this one by any chance? Western Digital Scorpio 160GB 5400RPM S150 8MB ?58:73

I just want to make sure I'm getting something that will work ok.

How long has it taken people to back up their hdds? I imagine that nearly 40gb via USB is quite a few hours?

When I first read about the crappy screws I thought I'd have a go at removing it. 1 screw head was completely worn away and I had to use some tiny watch makers pliers things to remove it.

It's weird that they use such low quality screws but then encourage people to swap their hdds. I mean, how much would it have cost them to use better screws?

                  EDIT:

I believe that they are actually made out of mercury???

Heh at least you got it done.

Also, any chance you can let us know those 'half a dozen new swearwords' that you invented?

                      Yep, that's the one.

Backing up my drive via USB (it was around 31Gb so just fitted on a makeshift FAT32 drive) only took 13 minutes.

Restoring it on the new one took the same amount of time so it wasn't as much of a ball ache as I thought it might be.

I could but it would probably send the forums swear filter in to over drive

I've had a skim thru this thread... I only have a 20gb Jap PS3, so thinking about the upgrade now. On dabs they have 2.5" drives up to 300gb... would these work? I know the answer should probably be yes, but everyone seems to be doing 120-160gb here.

Brilliant! Thanks, you've saved me nearly £15 there!!!

I get some sort of staff discount too from Dabs.

I don't work for them but the company I work for has some sort of special deal with them which gives me a staff account when I log in.

It's only about £5 difference but it's better than nothing I suppose.

                          EDIT:
Would that be 160gb of swearing now Spatial?

I think you're looking at something different.

The largest 2.5 internal drives are 160gb at the moment. Post a link to the drives you're looking at and hopefully somebody will be able to advise you.

Forgive my thickness (it's inherent, unfortunately ) but is backing up and restoring all of your data as simple as just copying all of it, saving it, then copying all of it and saving it again? Does it re-instate all of your accounts and details and everything?

Accounts don't appear to be stored on the hard drive.

They, along with your friends lists, settings and firmware are all all stored elsewhere (internal system memory perhaps) so if you can't back up your drive the worst thing you have to do is download etc everything again.
