    5.1 sound on the cheap?

I haven't a magoo when it comes to 5.1 sound setups. I'm looking to get set up though, but I don't want to spend too much.

I understand you get what you pay for and that, but are there any exceptions out there? Maybe you have a cheap setup which sound great?

    Let me know what/where.

    Thanks

I bought some Logitech X-530 speakers for 40 pounds which got good reviews.

I think they may be prone to interference but apparently the sound quality is as good as speakers costing waaaaaay more.

I wouldn't know as I've never set them up. New TV's speakers are pretty decent see.

If you're in London you can have mine for a fiver less tha I paid for them.

I asked a similar question on behalf of a friend and this is the one that he ended up getting

he got it yesterday and he said the difference between those and his cheap old system (logic3) was massive.
I don't know if that is the kinda cheap that you want.

Remember that if you want surround of of dvds and games and stuff you need a system that comes with a decoder, the one that womblingfree just posted is just the speakers , usually to be plugged into a PC sound card or DVD player that has 6 inputs.

If you're interested in the HTSS1000 I've got one for sale, as I don't get enough chance to use it these days:

Thanks for the replies so far. That Sony one looks good. At the moment it's something I can't afford due to buying a new TV/console/Games etc. Maybe I will hold back and go for that one next payday.

That one andrewfee is selling is a bargin.

Failing that, I completely recommend the Logitech Z-5500's.

Anyone know if the Logitech Z-5450 wireless system is any good? I've decided the wireless is the way I wanna go.

I looked at that until I saw you got 8 hours outta a set of batteries for the rear speakers.
                That makes it virtually pointless

The wires you get with the Z-5500's are huge, and it's a much better system than the Z-5450.

Just so happens that I have an almost new set of Logitech Z-5450 wireless 5.1 speakers on ebay at the mo for £140....they are the dogs, only reason I am parting with them is due to a house move and I have invested in a top of the range new set....but these are by far and away the best sub £200 you can spend on a 5.1 setup....

Any other recommendations around the 200 pounds mark? I've been looking at the Pioneer 360 set(not much user info on these though), I'm not looking for anything fancy and more interested in discrete rather than loud.

                      Thanks,
                      John

I bought the Yamaha AV59 package about 3-4 weeks ago.
                        You get a Yamaha RX-V359 amp: http://www.yamaha-uk.com/av_amps_rec...product_id=135

And some Yamaha speakers and a subwoofer. It can be had for around 200-230 pounds on most sites. The amp has 3 Component video inputs, 2 optical audio inputs, 1 digital coaxial audio in. I'm no audiophile by any means, and can only say "It sounds good to me".

Definitely seems like a good bit of kit if you want component switching, though with many HDTVs being short of HDMI inputs, I think the Sony package is probably best for most people.

Actually most of the latest TVs have multiple HDMIs, but in Europe there's very few (if any) that have multiple component ports, so component switching may be more ideal.

Though as far as audio goes, it would be useful to send the sound down the HDMI's and free up optical ports, imo anyway. Assuming you won't be using the Component sound.

Suppose it falls down to just getting which you need more.
