Media Player 9 - Windows XP problem

I'm having problems playing .XVID and .DIVX files (which is annoying, as I only have 8). The files play okay but Windows has an annoying habit of doing one of the following....

    Hanging
    Rebooting
    Blue Screening

when I play files, jump into the middle of a movie (normally causes a crash) or load files.

The errors when it does display them all seem to be with memory or paging. :/

Anyone got any suggestions, it's the latest version of MP9 and installing an older version doesn't seem possible. The XVID and DIVX codecs are the latest ones too (not that I can find older ones anyway). If anyone know a freeware program that will test the memory then that'll be good.

(Note about piracy : The movie files I'm playing are for DVDs or Videos that I own and can't bring with me on my long trips abroad.)

It shouldn't cause crashes etc but I've found that Media player 9 is a bug ridden **** fest. I use 2k so I can't system retore but with XP you can... why not try that?

Or use Power DVD instead, I use this to view all my media files. Its pretty good software Id say and performs better than MP9.

The ironic thing is I do have said program on my machine, it came bundled with it. I've not touched it as I don't want to set a DVD region...

However I'll give it a whirl. Thanks Marcus.

try www.videolan.org/vlc/ they appear to support all types of codecs including all the ones you have mentioned,

i've installed this program and its been ok for me better than media 9 anyway!!

Also look for BSPlayer... it's great. It even lets you set whatever it's playing back as a desktop background... pointless but untertaining.

I use Media Player Classic. There's no bloat and it uses the old media player 6.4 look, and it plays just about any file you have a codec for (including Quicktime and realplayer).
