Another vote for softmods here.

I've had a chip 'malfunction' some time after it was installed so it's just another thing that can (possibly) go wrong. Don't think there was anything my chipped machine could do that my soft mod couldn't.

There seems to be a common misconception that you can't fit a larger hdd in a soft mod but it can be done....just takes a bit more time & effort.

You could go on live - just to see, or get an eeprom from a non-live xbox, solder it in your own and you're away!

But surely if I connect it to Xbox live then that would ruin any chance I had of being able to change Hard Drives anyway? Or am I totally wrong?

Whoops! Meant to say after you've popped the bigger HD in go on live...
The worst case is that the box has been on live, so you'd need a new eeprom popping in the box.

You don't need to solder it in. Just use an eeprom editor
