My Japanese 360 has the D-Terminal settings Kubrick mentioned, and I connected a HDD from my PAL unit with no problems.

My Asian ntsc-j machine lists the HD modes as per a PAL machine when connected via component. Just to add to the confusion.
One way to determine if it was Japanese or Asian would be to check the DVD region, if you have region 2 (UK/Japan) and region 3 (Asia) disks.
I'm fairly convinced this will be a UK box though. One way to determine that would be to hook up composite video, and check what the video signal is. If you get 50Hz PAL by default, with pal60 options, you have a pal machine.
... unless by some peculiar magic the region was changed by the update, but I really don't think that is possible.
I have a HDMI Japanese one too, but haven't used component with that.

Sounds very iffy to me. It wont change region by shoving a HDD in simple as that m8. The machines are region locked its the reason why some us have (or like myself saving up for) a JPN/Asian 360 for the shumps over their. If it was a genuine JPN model it would boot region free games and JPN only like say radien fighters aces it just wouldnt boot PAL only games as that to me says its a euro model.
The HDD dont affect ther region its the hardware in the machine if you could their would be flash updates around the net to make 360s change regions or we would all be making a B line for JPN HDD drives. Instead the only hack is to flash the drive and then its for same territory (not condoning it I dont have a pirate machine its just for tech purposes) their is no hack to region change/region free a 360 like you can with a PS2. If it was geniunetly down to using a HDD from europe then all you would need to do would be to taket he HDD out and it would boot in JPN territory but it dont work like that Im afraid. Theirs just no way they would implement a system like that anyway as they would be constantly region changing peoples machines back as a repair because loads of people buy periphs from other territorys. You would also get disclaimers all over net saying only to be used with a JPN unit etc.. or will change your territory.
Easiest way to check I would have thought is the powerbrick as I thought a JPN model needed 110v brick (wheras Asian comes with 220) so would need a stepdown if it was fresh boxed model /2nd hand all intact so if its come with a UK powerbrick that would be my first worry. Have to ask the other guys with JPN units if you can swap powerbricks for 220v UK one or not as if not then theirs your answer I guess. I know you can with certain models but for me Id want to know why I didnt get the official JPN brick and be informed I would need a stepdown or my own PAL brick when I bought it as its going to be much easier for a seller to box a complete JPN model up as is then to go about faffing and sellling you one with a UK powerbrick. That for me smells of a PAL dupe but I could be and always is wrong first before Im rightAlso did it come with any games if so what are they as if theirs any in that list what we know are PAL only then its an easy spot m8. ALso forgot to mention JPN models come with Dterminal so another question to ask and Asian component.
Just for reference I know that my second replacement PAL Unit looked identical to that sticker (Jan 07). My PAL Elite model has a different smaller sticker and obviously HDMI but thats not what where looking for lol
