Ok, a little help here please chaps:

The HDD I want to put in my PS3 is what is now my old 160gb external HDD for the laptop. I've just got a 500gb external HDD and wanted to take the disc out of the old ex HDD and put it in the PS3 instead the 60gb HDD that is in there at the mo.

So, can I back-up my PS3 using my old ex HDD, take it out of it's casing, remove the 60gb from the PS3 and slot in the 160?

There's 39gb of back-up data so it would be great if I could do this - is it possible? Thank you

      ? Thats confusing. hehe

I'd personally back your 60GB ps3 up to the 500GB one, then put the 160 in your ps3 and transfer the backup back from your 500 to the 160.

But if I do what I suggested, I won't need to copy it back on to the 160 because it'll already be on the HDD right? But I guess by your response that what I suggested is possible yeah? Sorry, it was hard to explain without being a bit confusing!

it backs up to binary image files, .bins, so that won't work the way you suggested.

(or maybe they are labelled .1,.2,.3 etc but they are a byte for byte binary image, split to 4GB files (fat32's file size limit)

You have to do it this way, you can't back up to the 160 then put it in and have it work, because it backs up to a fat32 filesystem as files, not a proprietary PS3 filesystem layout.

                This better?

Successfully pimped my Launch 60GB PS3 today to a nice 250gb WD Blue Scorpio 5400 rpm, backed up my PS3 data to my 500GB Buffalo External HDD,then simply restored it once i had fitted the new HDD,and besides those little screws on the HDD caddy being a pain in the butt everything else was completed very easily indeed..

                      Well Happy now.

                      G.

I have a couple of accounts and a nice pile of DLC on my 60gb launch ps3 and I wanna upgrade the hdd. Would i be right in assuming if I do the backup thing then, upgrade then restore my HDD I will still have to re download all the the DLC like games and map packs?

Yes mate? just back up your PS3 data first then swap over your HDDs and then restore your old data to your new HDD . As for your DLC it will all still be there ready to go.

Awesome, I was under the impression by the message when I go to the backup utility that only the basic stuff would be backed up...

Also on Sony's site it states:

Some types of backed up data can be restored on another PS3™ system. The types of data that can be restored on another system are as follows:
                            • - Saved data from PLAYSTATION®3 format software
                            • - Image files under (Photo)
                            • - Music files under (Music)
                            • - Video files under (Video)
                            • - Bookmarks added under (Internet Browser)
                            • - Terms that were added using (Settings) > (System Settings) > [Add/Edit Term], or predictive terms that were "learned" by the on-screen keyboard

I only saved my games saves and progress files, anything I had downloaded, I had to re-download, be it game add-ons, demo's or PSN games. I just saved things onto a memory card rather than transfer files to my PC or a USB drive though.

On this topic, now I have a chuffing big drive, what do I put on it?????? How do I make the most of my expanded PS3's HDD seeing Sony dont have full game install's atm, or some games dont have any install at all!

Does anyone know what the biggest hard drive you can fit in a PS3 I'm looking at getting a 750GB or 1TB drive.
