    Onkyo TX-SR706 - first thoughts

Finally got my Onkyo TX-SR706 surround amp/receiver. ?499

Because of the enormous amount of modes and options, it was pretty daunting at first, but the easiest bit was the audio levels and delays which it set up for me using the microphone placed in various seating positions.

It did admirably well and the surround sounds way better than my old Marantz SR5200, with much better balance from front to rear and even at low volume enough bass and voice channel.

Stereo sounds pretty much the same, i.e. excellent.

Before I turned it on, I plugged everything in to it and it was easy to read the various source sockets. It came with some labels to wrap around my speaker cables very useful.

Once up and running, I'd got it all right and it was also easy to assign sound and video inputs to each other and. If only it had a scart and VGA socket! You can rename all the sources if you fancy, although I've left them standard so that it's easy to reprogram the Logitech Harmony (which was super easy to make the amp switch in).

I've set it up with just hdmi going to the TV and then component stuff into the back of the amp. It looks great and I can't for life of me see any change in quality from the conversion in the unit rather than the TV.

It runs a little hotter than my old one which I was warned about, but it's marginal.

The zone2 is a cool feature - I can listen to different stuff in my other room - it has extra speaker outputs for the 2nd room, but I've taken a line out to a separate dual amp because I have two sets of speakers. You can use the zone2 even when the main amp is in standby, with a source selector button. i.e. separate power led for zone2 Handy power saving there. If you aren't using the extra speaker posts for zone2, you can instead use them to biamp the front speakers if your speakers support it.

There's an oldschool blue light around the volume control, but thankfully this can be turned off.

There's a "pure" button which turns off all the video gubbins and display etc. Only useful for digital inputs (optical/hdmi/coax).

Adjustable startup volume is nice. No surprises with loud stuff when you turn it on. Additionally, you can match the volumes of different sources so that you don't have to keep mucking around with the volume so much when switching between sources.

Onscreen menu works well (only via hdmi), but all the same is visible on the unit - much improved over the old marantz which you had to use the onscreen at all times during setup.

So as I said, music is much the same, but surround is much better. Every detail is represented so much more distinctly. I always thought my center and surrounds, being Eltax, were just a bit rubbish, but they are now performing vastly better and my Mercury M3s sound like they match rather than being completely overpowering. Watching the scene in the Matrix where they storm the building to rescue morpheus, is now bright and vibrant, whereas it really was sounding a bit dull on the old amp in comparison.

Whether this was worth it over the 606 is dubious. I got sucked into the "upscales to 1080p" stuff (606 only does up to 1080i), but my TV does amazing scaling and is 720p anyway It's THX certified but none of my speakers are... so the crossover setup changed but sounds like it's got it right and I've yet to try the much hyped THX Loudness Plus feature which might be quite cool because I do a lot of film watching in the evening after the kids are asleep. I'll add more on that when I try it.

"sounds" awesome (sorry), I've got that Marrantz and was looking for a replacement at some point, moving the Marantz upstairs. I take it each source can ave different delays programmed?

Where did you get it from?

There's the delays for speaker distances which is a universal setting and then there's a delay for lipsync, but I'm not sure if it's per source. I'll check. I've not played with that yet.

I got it from Now That's Hifi in Chichester. Didn't fancy using a cheap online merchant in case it did an EmpireDirect.....

The AV sync is in the source options, i.e. choose source/e.g. DVD/av sync adjust, so I presume it's per source.

There's some cool stuff about moving the sound field around which I need to play with. Just need time to set all this stuff up.

Force man, have you got any tips from using the 606 for me? Most of the features seem very similar.

Oh and although it's hotter than my old Marantz, it's not hot enough for me to worry about putting my other dual amp straight on top of it, feet leaving a 1cm gap.

Excellent first impressions Charlesr, good to hear you're getting on well with this as I'm sitting here looking at mine in it's box at the moment. Setting up all my new home cinema kit on Saturday so will be able to give some feedback on it then as well.
I'm using some Kef 3005's with mine so I'm hoping Its going to sound pretty good, just not looking forward to getting all the speaker wire under the carpet (women!).

My wire goes into the walls under the floorboards and down other walls.....
The dust was amazing. As was ripping up all the floorboards and then recarpeting upstairs.

I don't think I will have any tips about stuff you don't know already.... I installed everything, play a little with the settings until I was happy with the sound and that's about it...
I never even used zone 2

Ok, a bit of extra info. After more careful analysis, this is better for stereo than my old amp. I do a fair bit of listening at lower volumes in the evening and I've been trying out the "DynamicEQ". It's fairly sensational at dealing with this. Never liked "loud" buttons before, but this works. Angel by Massive Attack really throbs even at low volume, but all the detail elsewhere in the range is solid.

I've also had a chance to try with it at louder volumes (with DynamicEQ off) and again, it's better than my old amp once the power is needed - Invaders Must Die is pumped out with ease and is making my old speakers really sing. I was never happy when the volume went up on my old amp - it was nice and loud, but something was lacking. Never knew what it was and still don't (control? depth? blah blah?), but the new amp isn't lacking it!

Happy. Makes me wonder how much better some new speakers would be. Mine being 12 years old....

This morning, my HDMI connection from the 706 to the Panasonic PH9 panel has gone mental. It's kind of there, but massively striped vertically and massive colour loss, so all pink or all green (after turning off and on again).

It all worked fine last night while watching SKYHD and all I did was turn everything off with the remote. I haven't touched anything. Suspects are:
The amp (it's not the Sky box because the Amp menu has the same problem)
                          The lead (doubtful?)
The hdmi board in the TV (TV works fine via VGA from the Xbox360)

I then turned it on again a bit later to take a photo and it's all working fine

Someone on avf said "Sounds like a faulty hdmi board in the amp, which is a common problem on the onkyo 06 series."

                          Bum.

Also, I discovered the instructions for showing running temp.

7 Tracks in (after turning it on) on a normal listening level and it has settled at 51°C. Hot but not ridiculous.

Onkyo's are pretty notorious for pumping out the heat. That temp does seem a bit high though. Is it in a unit?

Mine doesn't ever get above 32 but then I jury rigged some large PC fans in my unit to keep the air flowing.
