    Ps3 noisy fans

I used to be able to watch playtv indefinatly for hours and the ps3 would keep quiet, but these days (for last 2months or so of use) the fans come on after the unit just being on for 5mins or so, and never shut up

Its annoying and distracting from games and tv etc, is my unit just giving up the ghost?

If you have a 40GB model or later it might be worth doing the fan cleaning trick by switching if off from the back, holding down eject and power then flicking the switch back on, that clears out quite a bit of dust if you tip it with the vents facing downwards, that may be the cause of the fans kicking in constantly.

yeah done that a few times, doesnt help sadly

Im on the login screen right now, and its just kicking away with the fan constantly, screensavers on etc but still it carries on, its really distracting tbh, thats why i hardly play anymore, would have thought it would of turned off after 10mins on screensaver and all users logged out, the air coming out back isnt even hot

It?s probably just the summer heat. Try positioning it upright and placing it closer to the window or somewhere cooler.

Thats sadly not always an option thanks to wire lengths etc, but room is generally cool, like i say it only started happening recently and from what i can see nothings changed, in the environment its in etc

I guess i was expecting a more damning diagnosis

I’ve had one die on me (60gb model) and before it conked out I would see artifacting when I left it on for too long; soon as you see any it‘s a gonna.

The fan speed stayed the same for the most part, which is presumably the reason it died, as it should have been going full tilt to keep things cool.

I've just bought a PS3 last month and for the first week or two - before all this damn summer heat - it was really quiet while playing. Now though after 20min or so it gets noticeably louder like yours.

I think its solely down to the increased heat we're having atm and I guess the fans inside have variable speed control to combat it.

Still, even at its loudest its near silent compared to my turbine-engine powered 360!

I vaccum the vents on my 60gig model (first while it's off, then again when it's on) when I notice it getting too noisy. Seems to do the trick

I ran some tests by just plugging it in and around various places in the house, upstairs in big airy room, by open window etc, anyhow it still does the same, just sitting on XMB fans go off after about 5mins and never stop

Might just buy another one, its doing my head in when im trying to play games, do the new 80gbs come with any improved components ala 360 updates?

*edit* ok sony say they do a swapsey for 145 quid next day or near as damn it with courier, i hand over my system and they hand me fully refurbished one from sony etc, not brand new but all hardware checked, new case, new components replaced if need be, 3 month warrenty and such on the replaced one, could be worth a try i guess, these fans are really doing my head in

I was going to suggest using continuous play but...

                      ye hehe

I just noticed above that donpepperoni mentioned his ps3 even on max was less noisy than his 360, which is the opposite for me, i can barely hear my 360 now after my ears have been soiled by the ps3

Seriously considering the 145 refurb exchange with sony, mainly just because ive got hundreds of quids worth of games, playtv etc that im not using anymore, the system just sits there because its just a fking chore to actualy play and enjoy anything when its turned on, sigh, but i dunno, ugh, sony tech support arnt much help, trying to ask them if they think it should be exchaned just ends up with no useful info, damn it i need somebody "i the know" to speak to

                        Hmm
Took the system upstairs (just unit and power cable) put it next to open night air window and left it running for 30mins (on the XMB etc)...no fan kick in....

                        son of a

Im going to need to run some more tests (push it to the limit...limitttttt)....or spend the 145 attempting to air out my ****ty bedroom a bit better

I might try that fan trick on mine. It's usually been pretty quiet, but now when I'm watching a Blu-ray it'll kick into high gear after about 20 minutes to the point where it's annoying on films without bombastic sound. One of my main incentives for buying a standalone BD player was that they're silent these days.

I used to have the PS3 at my parents' house where we kept chinchillas, so there's probably a lot of dust in there.

If you've had it a while might be worth trying FullSpecWarrior's suggestion of vacuuming the vents to suck some dust/dirt out.

Not sure what model your 360 is but mine is an early one, which was very noisy to start with but since I got it back from RRoD repair, its even noisier if thats possible

I'd be a bit reluctant to spend ?150 on a swap for a refurb tbh. You could sell yours instead and then I'd bet you would only have to spend ?100-150 to buy a brand new one.

i tried the vacuuming thing before but there was no real dust visable to say so really.
Im running it now with giant 1 meter fan infront of the intake and it still does it, this is pissing me right off i got to say, if the fans actually shut down after a certain period of time i might believe that it was ambient temperature, but the fact that once they start, they never ever stop, its got to be a hardware fault, theres no other explanation.
You mentioned picking up a new one, i would consider it but does the ps3 undergo hardware upgrades like the 360 with every new revision, such as the 80gigs which are now the only ones sold new?

*edit* the fact is that as ive said above, the noise and the hassle just stops me for using the system, so its effectivly a door stop at the moment, i used to watch playtv all day without a peep out of the system, but now its impossible and frankly i am ****ing angry, im not entirly sure at what, at heat perhaps, but yes angry because i cant identify or realistically fix this, maybe ill take a gamble on refurb and itll turn out alright, but i cant help thinking its more ****ing hassle, Y*)(£$&)("£U$)(*"£U$O"£IUJ$OIJ D(*)FU£"$(*)U$£"*($&£"(*$&(£*" &$UYOIWSHDIOUJWEHLKJP@}P{P_{}){I){I *tears/sobs*
