    HL2 Subscription plans

"Developer Valve has revealed that it plans to offer a $9.99 monthly subscription system to purchasers of Half-Life 2, as well as releasing three separate versions of the game - which has now seemingly slipped to November.

In an email, later confirmed as authentic, posted to forums on Half-Life2.net, and a later follow-up on the forum thread, Valve boss Gabe Newell confirmed that the company intends to offer an optional subscription which will grant members free additional content for Half-Life 2, delivered over the Steam digital distribution system.

This content would include Valve's official modifications such as Counter-Strike 2 and Team Fortress 2, and any other content released officially for the game during its life span - which will also be made available to non-subscribers for an additional fee.

The subscription plan is entirely optional, but according to Newell, "we're pretty sure that the $9.95 guys are going to get the better value, as we've been pretty good over the years at generating a lot of content."

The company is also planning to offer three different SKUs of Half-Life 2 at launch, with a basic version of the game stripped of its multiplayer and mod capabilities being the cheapest, followed by a "standard" edition which includes these capabilities, and a "collector's edition" which will feature what Newell describes as "lots of cool bonus stuff".

Some of these versions will be available for download on Valve's own Steam service, which is sure to be watched with interest by publishers and retailers alike - as it represents the first concerted effort by a developer to bypass the traditional value chain and deal directly with its customers.

However, both gamers and interested industry observers may have to wait longer than expected to see Half-Life 2. Although Vivendi maintains that the release date for the game is "TBC", and Valve issued assurances at ECTS last week that the game would make its ship date at the end of September, UK retail chain GAME this week informed customers who had pre-ordered the game that it has slipped back to November.

It's not clear whether this is based on new information received by GAME which is not being circulated widely by Vivendi, or whether the company is simply responding to earlier rumours that the game had slipped - which were denied categorically by Valve."

For 10 bucks a month I'd expect dedicated servers for that lot.

Yep i agree. Maybe a small fee if they release such mods as TFC or CS but i wouldnt pay an ongoing subscription for the fact they were working on mods that could be done through the community to equal effect, afterall CS was created by amateurs before Valve bought it.

Remember, you don't have to subscribe. I think the traditional option will be the best. i.e. Buy the boxed game which will let you play HL2 single player and HL2 multiplayer, then download and play free mods and buy 'premium' mods like Counter-Strike 2 etc. as boxed versions.

Makes much more sense than paying a subscription fee every month on the off chance that there'll be something released that you want.

People all over the net are making a big deal about this but at least there is a choice. If it was Steam subscriptions only then it'd be time to start worrying.

I just hope its not going to be neccesary to subscibe to patch any problems with the game

I'd hate to think they'd rush a Sept 30th release only to have you pay to patch the hell out of it

Nice to see them ****ing their fans up the ass with salted barbed wire.

Paying extra for multiplayer is an absolute joke and having to pay a further subscription, just so I can download Counter-Strike is madness in the extreme.

Precisely, makes me wonder what everyone's getting so worked up about tbh.

Right - halflife2.net has an e-mail from Gabe Newell that clarifies all this a lot further, explaining just how they're not "****ing their fans up the ass with salted barb wire", as Burai so kindly put it.

Basically, the three versions you can obtain are as follows:
                  • The Subscription Option --> Pay $9.99 a month subscription, get game free, along with future expansion packs, retail mods such as Team Fortress II, and potentially other Steam-powered games.

The Basic Boxed Copy --> Retail Half-Life 2's that just the single player, no multiplayer and no mod support. Presumably, this will be cheaper than the usual $50 cost of retail games. Planned to be on sale in massmarket US stores like Wal*Mart (personally, I doubt we'll get this version in the UK!)

The Standard Boxed Copy --> The one 99% of people will probably buy, this is Half-Life 2 retail with multiplayer and full mod support, and NO SUBSCRIPTION. The difference is, you will obviously have to go out and buy expansion packs, retail mods such as Team Fortress II, and future Steam-powered games, whereas subscribers have those included in their subscription.
Just shows how lazy news reporting can get people all worked up over nothing -- if all that had been clear in the original news splattered across the web, Valve wouldn't have taken so much needless heat over what is a remarkably flexible, forward-thinking delivery system.

The main reason people still play CS/TF/DoD is becuase its free, theres no ****ing way on this earth im going buy a sodding mod, i would rather play the billion CS copies for free that are bound to come out for HL2.

In the mean time i have BF1942 with Desert Combat, interstate82, Starwars and Pirate mods.

All technical patches etc will be free and readily available to download for everyone.

It's pretty tiring reading all the HL2 forums lately with people moaning and whinging about these plans, if you take the time to actually understand what's going on you'll see no-one is getting '****ed up the ass'.

Firstly, why isn't HL2 considered as the complete package in it's own right? Just because the original plays host to lots of big name mods it doesnt automtically give you the right to demand anything built around the new engine for free. I don't think the developers of CS, the most popular online game in the world are going to work for free any more, do you? It's up to the mod developer to decide whether or not they want to charge for their mod, if they do I imagine they'll have to pay Valve a huge amount to license their technolgy so only the most serious of projects will go professional. I'm sure there will be more free amateur mods than ever available to download on steam and on websites.

You don't 'pay extra for multiplayer' either. A boxed HL2 with single player and multiplayer modes included will be the price of a normal PC game, the singleplayer only version (which might not even be released outside of the US) will cost less.

As for the Steam subscription system, you have to be pretty stupid to blindly sign up to anything, don't you? Handing over $9.95 a month just in case there is something that takes your fancy is incredibly stupid. I'm sure most sane people will just buy the SP&MP boxed version at regular PC game price, enjoy HL2 and any free mods than interest them and buy the likes of CS2 and TF2 in stores if they want to play them - I know that's what I'm going to do.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm not getting worked up over nothing, I'm gonna have to ****ing pay for CS 2 et al. They know how many people still play CS and therefore know people will pay for it.

                          Milk.

btw - everyone has missed the point of this thread, it seems. We know paying 10 bucks a month is stupid, we're not complete tards. But the fact of the matter is, it's a stupid sodding idea in the first place.

I wonder exactly how game authentication would work. With standard HL and CS, you only need to have the CD key for HL and that's good for any of the mods. I wonder if they will issue seperate authentication keys for things like CS2?

Things move on, as Fire said the makers of CS can't be blamed for wanting to make some money out of doing what they love, god knows they did it long enough for free but finally took the next step of turning a mod into a full retail product.

This doesn't happen very often, obviously, hence why people are getting so pissed off about it I think, they feel they have a 'right' to free CS.

Do we totally doubt the capability of anyone to produce a new mod which rivals Counterstrike? The mod scene for HL2 will, in all probability, be even larger than the huge HL1 scene, personally I suspect there's going to be more than enough to interest me there without clinging frantically to CS.

The 10 bucks a month idea may seem a little esoteric, yet I can't help but compare the people who moan about it to knowledgeable PAL gamers who constantly complain about releases and such while knowing they could easily and cheaply procure an NTSC machine. You don't have to go with the $9.99 a month scheme, just pay full-price for a game you would have eagerly paid full-price for anyway before any of this malarky.

I think I need to go and lie down.
