To rule out hard drive failure properly you'd need to download the diagnostic tools from the hard drive vendor's website. Can't really be sure until you do.

Can't really be sure even if the diagnostic tools come up all clean.
Best thing to do is connect the same drive to another SATA port or PC, or connect a different drive in exactly the same way the original was connected.
It could even be simple filesystem corruption.
The price of drives these days, and considering how much time you can waste tracking these things down, is simply replace the drive and copy the data over to the new one. Then format the old drive and try it in a different system.
