Blu-ray player that will play multi-region DVDs

    Hey all,

My upscaling DVD player is dying at a rapid rate and needs replacing. I've also only got the ability to play Region A Blu-rays so I figured a UK BR player would be a better replacement.

Can anyone recommend me a BR player with the ability to play DVDs from any region?

Not looking to spend more than ?130 - ?150.

    Cheers.

Richer Sounds do the Sony BDPS360 with a multi-regional DVD capability for £120.

I bought a universal remote for ?10 to purely unlock the multi-region on my Sony S360. Certainly not worth giving an extra ?10 to Richer Sounds when you can do it yourself. I'll even be happy to send you the remote so you can also make any prospective purchase region free.

I bought mine for ?99 when it was being heavily discounted at quite a few places and came with copies of Terminator Salvation, Slumdog Millionaire and Angels and Demons.

Any of them that are modded for multiregion Blu-ray will also be multiregion for DVDs.

Whilst in a different price range - I wholeheartedly recommend the Oppo BDP-83 Multi-region Blu-Ray/DVD player. Its speed, ease of use and image quality are absolutely outstanding.

Yep I second this, I have one of these and it plays everything. Multi region blu ray is done via a simple code sequence on the remote. Decodes all the audio formats, has 7.1 multichannel outputs and has the anchor bay 2010 chip for video processing. Quite a step up as the multiregion bluray version costs ?589 but it's replaced my ps3 and oppo 981 for disc playing.

Otherwise I'd also recommend the Sony 360 for a quick cheap solution

Does anyone know if the Oppo BDP-83 allows you move subtitles up into the picture if they're in the lower border?

Yeah, that was added in the most recent firmware.

If you're looking at the Oppo route, I've got the BDP-80, which is basically the 83 minus the dedicated scaling chip. It still upscales DVDs to 1080p, but its performance there is more in line with your average upscaling player. Everything else is the same, so fast loading, MKV playback, analogue audio out, etc. See the official feature comparison here.

That'll set you back about £350 modded for multiregion DVD and Blu-ray.

Wait, what - really? What's the code?
I have one of those here somewhere and that would be VERY useful.

It's based on an old beta firmware. The details are here.

Ah, replacing the firmware. Thanks, will see if that works for me, the unit I have here is a prototype of the cancelled European BDP-831 but it's basically the same.

                          You're a star

My only requirements to justfiy moving from a PS3 were movable subtitles and multiregion. Do you know if the BDP-80 allows outputting audio via optical and video by hdmi? My receiver is borked and this is the only way to get sound at the mo.

I can't say definitively because I haven't tried it, but I'd imagine so.

There must be plenty of people with HDMI connections on their TVs who use an older receiver to handle the audio and that's how I used to run my sound from several different disc players before I got a new receiver. The manual doesn't say that you can't and the settings menu lets you set optical/coaxial settings independently of HDMI.

It's got analogue audio outs if your receiver can handle that too.

I've never seen a player that doesn't keep the older analog outputs active. Like NekoFever says, it would probably not sell very well.
