My only requirements to justfiy moving from a PS3 were movable subtitles and multiregion. Do you know if the BDP-80 allows outputting audio via optical and video by hdmi? My receiver is borked and this is the only way to get sound at the mo.
Sorry guys I should've been clearer my Opp0 83 has the multiregion mod for BD and uses a remote code to switch between but not the one isted in the link above.

Anyway, my 83 can output video via hdmi and audio via optical so would imagine that yes the Opp 80 would do the same. Had some audio dropouts using that method (old legacy amp) so switched to multichannel out and analogue cables which finally gave me HD audio but will be buying a new receiver soon so will just switch everything to hdmi.

Ah, sorry. I assumed it was that method when you mentioned entering key combinations. Is yours the one where you turn it off and hold blue, then press 1-3 to switch between regions?

Sorry for the late reply, yes it is.

Thinking of buying an Oppo MR Blu-Ray player - are there any suppliers that you guys would recommend? Thanks, Tony.

I've just bought one of these

Can be made multi region for DVD and Blu-ray with a code input and only £58. Works fine and the picture quality is stunning - makes my PS3 playback look terrible in comparison.

Really? That looks like a quick and easy option for me - as i'm not keen on spending £350+ for an Oppo, but want the MR playback! Is the MR easy to access?

Thanks Stuey - I'd been browsing their site earlier, and was impressed, so good to get a favourable review.

Now what to do - take the cheap option or the expensive one....

Probably also worth stating - I'm only going to play Blu-Rays through whichever player I go for. All I'm after on multi-region playability and an improvement in picture quality from my USA PS3. Any thoughts appreciated.

That's where I got mine. Very quick communications when I emailed with some questions, ordered that afternoon, and it arrived the next morning. Definitely recommended.

I picked up the same ?58 one as Spatial to give it a blast - multiregion for DVD's and BR. Some people have had a dodgy machine and have had to return, but mine's a goody and has played everything I've thrown at it, and for under ?60 can't complain really.

Yeah there's a rumour that it won't play some Fox films (started by one person as far as I can tell, which then got spread about), but it's been fine with me and everything I've asked of it. Loads a little bit faster than my PS3 and the image quality is much, much better.

My PS3 picture is very, very dark and looses a hell of a load of detail but with this it's all a lot more vibrant and with a greater depth of colour reproduction. I put The Dark Knight in as a test when I got it and ended up watching over an hour with my jaw on the floor - I was amazed at how much detail I'd been missing (and means I have to revisit most of my Blu-ray collection as a result).

MR playback's pretty easy - you just have to put in the six digit code from the main screen each time you want to swap between region A or B.

As Escape said, for the price it's worth a try before shelling out a couple of £100.

Wow. I had no idea there'd be any difference in BR players, given it's all digital.

Yeah, I thought PS3 was supposed to be one of the better players!

My sarcasm meter's wonky this evening but I get the feeling you're mocking me.

All I can go by is my own eyes and the PS3 outputs a much darker picture which looses a hell of a lot of detail. I've spent three years tinkering with the PS' settings and never improved it. Plugged that player in and the difference was immediately noticeable.
