If you backup/restore to the same system you will maintain everything. I'm not sure you can do a restore to a different system at all can you?

Transfer apparently copies everything except the protected data, which is moved (i.e. deleted from the source PS3). And according to FSW you don't need to deactivate the PS3 either (Although you obviously would if you were selling).

New PS3 is at home so I'll be trying this out tomorrow evening, assuming the new HDD arrives. I'll also be transferring from a US 60GB to a UK Slim, hopefully the region difference won't cause any problems.

^ Shouldn't do I transfered from a UK 60GB to an Asian 250GB. I had a few problems getting it started, was using the ethernet cable that came with the PS3 and I ended up switching to the one that came with the 360 and continued to try before it decided to start up.

Just to get back to the noise thing, just had a sound test with a 60 & 250, if you can hear a difference between them Neil your ears must be HA-YOOOOOOODGE.

OK OK agreed they are both very quiet, I just think it's the tone that's different tone is all.

Phatties= Low pitched whirry type noise

Slims = High pitched whiney noise.

My ears are perfectly in proportion thankee

My 60GB is way louder than my Slim. Massive difference between them.
            Kept you waiting, huh?

By the way I can't believe you actually did the sound test.....

              Was your girlfriend there?

              I'm guessing not

I ran the same game on both, just for equality. There may be a difference to the drive 'sound' Neil, i'll agree there, but one is no louder than the other is all i'm saying.

EDIT: No mate, she's down the gym.............the geekiness must be conducted on the side!

My lense drive makes a terrible noise when playing games recently, like it can't read the data off the disc properly...

Could this be dirt? How do I clean it? I tried opening the system but I need a 6 point screwdriver.

If I bought a slim, how easy is it to transfer all the data from the old PS3 HDD to the new slim? I really, really don't feel like redownloading 250 gigs of stuff off PSN.

I'm transferring mine over tonight mate, I'll report back when I'm done. As a note though, I did do a lot of house-keeping on the data (Removed all unnecessary game data) to make the transfer as painless as possible.

How is it done? Via an external HDD, or can you connect one PS3 to another via some kind of USB mini-LAN thing? When backing up my HDD to replace with a larger one I had to borrow an external one off a friend.

Easiest way if you have both PS3s is to connect them with an Ethernet cable (According to the manual (Which I think I linked earlier in this thread) you can use either a straight through or crossover, but I've read reports that it only works with a crossover) and use the data transfer utility - this was you'll get ALL data across.

If you use the backup/restore to an external device it won't copy the copy protected data.

Can't get anything going on at the moment. Put the new HDD in the slim, it prompts to update the firmware to 3.21 or later, I insert the USB stick (Right file in the right folder, formatted properly to FAT32 etc. etc.) and it says 'No applicable update data was found'.

Ugh, duff copy of the update it seems (Even though I downloaded different versions several different times). They really should provide an MD5/SHA sum of a file like this so that you can confirm its integrity.

                              Formatting drive...

And it's transferring now. When you set the source system to transfer it'll tell you that you need to deactivate the system, but I just selected no and it still let me start the transfer.

Saying around 1hr for the transfer, which is only around 70GB after my housekeeping.
