60gb UK PS3 - Fans so LOUD! Normal?

    Hi all,
I've had a couple of U.S 60gb PS3's before and while increasing in noise after a few hours gaming never really noticed a prob. Just picked up an immaculate UK old 60gb model and within 5 minutes of booting (placed on flat, hard surface with enough space) the thing is louder than my 360 and sounds like a plane taking off! The unit isn't actually that hot itself though.

I have had a look at some guides etc. on the net, but is the PS3 about to kick the bucket? Or is this normal?
    Cheers

Could be either, mine was doing that for a good while but it's recently died on me

Hmm, might be time for screwdrivers and compressed air methinks. Was yours going high-speed upon booting? Mine is not getting hot at all, just loud!

Mine was very loud yeah, moreso than my 360 by quite a way. Don't remember a time when it wasn't.

That said, if yours isn't brand new it's probably due to excessive usage.

Mine does the same thing. Been doing it for as long as I've had it. Bought it second hand a couple years back. It's annoying, but I simply crank up the volume on the game. Can't watch blu-rays on it though, that would've been too noise.

Blow some air through it, probably just dust.

I bought a Uk 60gb ps3 a few months back, and it was doing exactly the same as you say yours is doing.

I returned it the next day lol.

There's a thread about it on here (console section), as i was asking pretty much the same questions.

                  Cheers mate, :-)
Well the good news is I have got it down a little bit, as after cleaning did nothing I repalced the PSU with an old 60gb I picked up from a bootsale for a few quid, and this new (old!) PSU, obviously doesn't heat up as much. Also the bloke I got it from has given me an amount of cash back - which was good of him, so all may be ok...hopefully!

European PS3's apparently have cheaper fans which will be one reason for the loudness, think they're cheap 15 blade fans, the Japanese launch versions had 19 blade fans manufactured by Furukawa.

                    *Edit*
Quick look on ebay shows the cheaper fans compared to the Japanese & probably US launch version as well.

Can't say I have any problems with my EU PS3..

But then again, I only play it in bursts of 2 hours a few times a week.

Having read up a lot about this now, it just seemsto be a fan lottery and unfortunately the larger JAP/US fans are not always better. Anyway I've got the noise down a bit and I'm breaking out the thermal paste tomorrow

definately best to do the full paste/ clean out, as the fan just gets louder and louder trying to keep the thing cool then dies. My 60gb went that way and my 40gb is getting louder and i'm thinking of breaking the warranty stickers just to repaste and clean out.

Yeah, did the clean out yesterday and replaced PSU, today it's the silver paste and possibly replace the fan as I have another good condition one from my psare PS3. It's an easy console to take apart too - you don't need a TORX bit for the security either a flat headed screwdriver actually works better.

That wasn't my experience. All the screws in my old 60gb JP unit seemed to be made out of butter, I stripped them all in a single attempt.
