    How to rip my DVDs?

I want to watch my DVDs on my PC, but without having to put the actual disks in.

How can this be done? I assume I need to download some ripping programme from the web.

All help much appreciated. Assume no prior knowledge at all.

    Thanks

Try Handbrake and see how you get on.

Wouldn't he need something like DVDdecrypter to rip the dvd before converting with Handbrake? Or can you just convert without ripping the disc?

You can use DVDdecrypter to rip to an .iso which you can view directly with VLC for example or then re-encode typically without the menus, extra subtitles etc with Handbrake. Handbrake will work without the decryption but will be slower.

Handbrake still needs something to turn off the disc protection like AnyDVD. Good app though (handbrake)

Not entirely true - it uses components from VLC (needs to be installed separately) to decrypt on the fly, so can rip seamlessly straight from disc if required.

or you could google "DVDShrink", works with about 95% of my DVD's

I tried to convert a dvd, not a commercial title, after ripping with DVDdecrypter using Handbrake. After 6 hours it still wasn't done and seemed to have frozen. Last time I used a paid app, and it did the conversion in an hour. I wonder what happened, I really needed to convert something.

My i5 750 2.67GHz rips a 1:36 dvd in about 22mins with handbrake and AnyDVD. That's 22mins from start to finish. No need for any ripping in advance.

What settings are you using in handbrake?
For DVD, the following should be ideal for playback on the xbox/ps3:
                      Anamorphic: strict
                      Cropping: Auto
                      Video filters: off
                      codec: h.264
                      Framerate: same as souce
                      Av bitrate: 2000 (single pass)
audio: AAC (faac) DPL II, 48, 160
                      Container: mp4

Takes my i3 2100t about 5 minutes to convert a 25 min episode from DVD.

Handbrake can make MKV files to support dual audio tracks can it not?

Or an MP4 which is better supported on 360/PS3.
