Could it not be the actual switch in the console or is that what you have changed?

Have tried it with the top off, same problem. I thought it could be the reset button, but that works as normal if I hold the power button down.

Had a good look around and found a thread over at assembler games, I think it might be a bad power board and troubleshooting it seems like a pain.

So looks like I need a new power board, are Dreamcast ones identical? As that would make one easier to find.

Nah, they are different. Plus there are a couple of diff Saturn power boards. Speedlolita had one for sale for a fiver the other day, check trading out.

I think the different boards are different lengths, so measure it to see if it's the right one I reckon

Cheers Pete, will search the trade forums. Thanks for the switch too, will post it back to you if you PM your details to me.

I have one, too, if speedy's is the wrong type. Can't remember what model Saturn mine is from but it's a 240v Voltek and says Model: S-7195 on it.

I still think it's not board-related, though, seeing as the power switch is a switch and not a button(like on PCs, and PS2 onwards). If you have to hold the power button down to keep the Saturn going, I don't really get how that would be the board itself.

You could test this out by cutting the grey power wire for the faulty switch and joining the two ends together, which would keep the Saturn powered, and see if it still switches off

The only way I figured it is possibly is the board is that I swapped the original switch for the one Pete sent me and it has the same problem. Will have a look inside the case later today for the serial, had to put it back together as my 4yo daughter would be into it if I didn't.

I suppose there's a slim chance both switches are just faulty, but seeing as the switch is from Pete, I highly doubt it

Maybe I'm getting the wrong end of the stick but, as I understand it, you have to keep the power button pressed down and if you let go the Saturn instantly switches off? Does the power switch actually feel like it's locking and unlocking when you press it?

I'm not discounting the possibility of it being the board but, seeing as all the switch does is join the two grey wires together until you press it again, it just seems... mechanical to me. I'd try joining the grey wires together and letting the machine run a while to see, as I expect the switch Pete sent you was the whole assembly with the grey wires so you've got a spare.

I was thinking it could be that the pressure you place on the console by holding the power button down is somehow pressing some other connections together and that's what's getting the power through, but you already mentioned blu tak and a ball of blu tak can only really put pressure on the switch itself, not the rest of the console...

Keep if for now, in case it's combination of board/switch!

Well had it apart again and not the same board as yours.

Not sure what the serial for this one is. But I think it is a 5 pin long board, according to the saturn forums this should work with any similar model 1 ones.

Am thinking of giving up and just looking for a new one on ebay.

Why not try joining the grey wires together and seeing how long it lasts?

                                lolol I mean electric... shocked?

                                Wiki:

"Electrocution is death or injury caused by electric shock, either accidental or deliberate."

Interesting. There was no injury as such, just a WTF moment and then my arm feeling like I'd done a million dumbbell reps. I was almost tempted to touch it with the other hand to get both arms done

I also got electric... shockered by my PS2.
