      for handbrake with DVDs try:
      container mp4
      anamorphic strict
      cropping auto
videofilters off (unless you have any interlaced stuff and then turn decomb to default)
      codec h.264
      framerate same as source
average bitrate 2000 kbps (single pass)
Audio, you'll have to decide - I use AAC DPLII because I stream to the xbox, but if you are going to a media player, it will do AC3 DD, so use that.

I have no experience with Blu ray ripping.

        Thanks for that Charles.

        Will get that setup.

I won't be ripping Blu's or HD-DVD this is simply to get rid of the stacks of DVD's & make a way to get at them easier.

Yeah mate, it really is, easy to use, can stream from a network hard drive or internet and play eveything. It's got on board USB/SD support, looks nice and just works!

It's just perfect mate! I defo think it's the answer to your needs!

It is ok but there is no active media scraping. You have to do this from a PC using movie sheets or something similar.
It plays virtually anything though and the hack is straightforward.

Thanks smouty, I don't know what media scraping is, though. Is it do with streaming from a network? Would you say the Sumvisions are better than the WDTV? I really do need something that'll just play all formats, though.

Media scraping just DLs the latest shows for you. Pretty neat I guess, but kinda lazy doncha think? Not in a bad way.

Isn't scraping getting info/images for the shows/episodes to lay them out in a visually appealing way? That's what a 'scrape' is on XBMC, anyway.

                    eg:

You may be right, I've never actually looked up the definition.

I thought it was grabbing the latest available files from an RSS feed. Maybe I'm thinking of something else.

I'm using something to do that ATM called Sick Beard. Maybe you read about that and got the 2 confused.

If you don't mind not having any media info and just selecting from a list of files then pretty much any of the players mentioned will be fine.
I've been using XBMC for over 10 years and XBMP before that so have pretty much got used to it.

Here is a WDLXTV 'skin' using movie sheets

Initial impressions of the WDTV Live are quite positive. I had to update the firmware to the latest version which took quite a while and several restarts, but after that it was easy to set up and locate my media on the network. So far it's played everything I've thrown at it, which is fantastic.

Only negatives so far are the lack of aspect ratio control and the HDMI CEC seems a bit dodgy. I'd like to be able to stretch a 4:3 image to widescreen, even the PS3 had the option to zoom or fit to screen. And for some reason I can't use the direction arrows on the TV remote, but the Play, Stop, FF etc all work. Strange.

I shall fiddle with it some more over the course of the week and see how I get on.
