However, when I attempt to reduce the h-shift further (in order to move the picture closer to the right side), although most of the picture moves closer to that edge, the top inch of the picture "breaks up" and shifts a massive amount the other way. Not quite sure how to describe it, so hope that makes sense. Is this just another inherent problem with CRTs wearing down over time or is this easily fixable by adjusting other settings?

It's probably cranked a little too far, hence the slight roll-over effect. What you can do to compensate is make the H-SIZE slightly bigger, and maybe adjust the V-SIZE accordingly. You'll have a slightly bigger picture, but it'll respond better to being shifted left or right.

I'd still recommend you get yourself a Test Card DVD, as it makes the initial setup a lot easier. You probably won't need to adjust it ever again after that.

I thought the geometry on my trinitron tube, similar to this one, was ruin.....moved the speakers i'd been using away from the screen to realise that with them gone its 95% perfect, clever me :/

There should be an option to adjust the 'Upper Corner Pincushion', but they might've abbreviated it differently depending on the model (UC, UCP, UP_CPIN etc, etc).

Hmm, I couldn't seem to make any progress doing that. But, it's really ok, as the rest of the picture is fine and it's all on the screen. I'm not really sure how the Test Card DVD would help - it just seems to be extravagant pictures. Could you explain why it helps?

I will post a picture when I can get a photo of the TV screen properly, as CRTs don't seem to photo well lol.

The Test Card DVD has various patterns and grids that makes (precise) alignment a lot easier. I guess it might be overkill if you're happy with how it is anyway.

I see. You're probably right - especially since I don't currently have a DVD player as my PS2 is being borrowed

Having discovered the "screen position" setting in the GC start-up menu, I tinkered around a lot more and I think I'm finally happy with the setup. As per a previous request, here are some pics (the best I could get with 10 minutes and a phone camera):




The pictures make the screen look washed out and fuzzy, but I assure you it's not like that at all - it's really very bright and crisp. DreamMix TV is only being shown through composite in that pic, too (have yet to invest in a different video cable for my JP GC).

As a semi-related question, since I once selected 50Hz when fiddling with the geometry, SSBM is no longer giving me a prompt to select between 60Hz and 50Hz upon start up. The manual says nothing about this. Is there any way I can force that prompt up again?

You could always delete your save to reset the Melee setting, although it should be in the options menu too..

Thanks! Good to know my "work" had paid off.

I was about to respond with "Doy, why didn't I do that sooner" but as I booted up Smash Bros to check the menu, the prompt came up again, so no issue anymore... weird. It wasn't like it was a one off before - I tried a good three times earlier today and it didn't.

The same way 480p is enabled on the US games. North America gets optional 480p, and the option Europe is lucky to get is what North America gets by default

Yeah lookin' good there, I'm sure it looks much better in real life. I can never seem to get a decent photo of a CRT screen either.
