Windows 8 (Desktop) worth it? Are you using it?

I think the thing that makes my scream the most is that when you right click on a metro item, the menu that appears is NOWHERE NEAR the item. In the rest of windows, the menu that appears is exactly where you clicked so you don't have to move across the entire screen to select something.

Charles doesn't have easy access to the power button.

@obb - Ah, I never knew that. Interesting. Mountain Lion starts up faster than Win8 without using hibernation. Just sayin

In fact OSX uses the same technique, apple just don't call it hibernation that's all, they probably call it iBoot or some bollox like that.

If this is not proof that there is something sour within Windows 8 I don't know what is. There are about 4 'hidden' menus in either metro style (whatever they call it this week) and one in the bottom right of the desktop and another one at the left.

TBH I use Ctrl+Alt+Del or Alt+F4 to shutdown. I can't be arsed looking for another inexpiable hidden menu within a menu.

I am back off to boot in Linux Mint or Windows 7.

I still think the main issue, is that there was no tutorial on how to use this stuff and it is all well hidden. If you think of the Android OS it tells you about the features from the get go. Even older Windows versions like XP had a wizard to follow. And I assume there is something on Apple OSX, but Windows 8 goes here is a new UX go or it.
The charms bar is the one on the right. The left is open applications, and the bottom one is context sensitive based on what application you are in.

I'm pretty sure OSX doesn't have any guides built in, not that I can see anyway.

You ever tried doing a cold boot on a mac? takes like 15 minutes.

Not really.. my Macbook Pro takes about 20-30 seconds to reach the logon screen from cold boot.

I always turn off hibernation. Takes my PC no time to boot.

I've been using this on an acer w500 tablet and its very good for that. Not sure how it'd transfer to my laptop or desktop but I have a very adequate os in Win 7 for those right now.

Metro apps, in their full screen mode, would be rather annoying with a mouse and keyboard interface, I think.

If by minutes you mean seconds then I agree!

EDIT: With an SSD both OSs boot so fast now that hibernation really isn't needed.

Is this turning into a Mac vs Windows discussion?

Here's a new one I just ran into.

Microsoft, ENOUGH! I am not a 5 year old! It's been getting progressively dumber with each new version. I even turned the user account nonsense off, so why am I getting this?

Windows 9 is probably going to flash up periodic reminders that you should always tie your shoelaces carefully before walking down the street...

Apple did the same with mountain lion I think. Someone think of the children!

It's a bit like my article here talking about how we should have different settings on the console depending on what sort of user you are. For windows it should have "power user" option.

Just installed Windows 8 OS onto my living room PC... I have to admit, it's true what people have said, it's utter ****e.
