Broadband.. help before i go mad!

    Hi there..

Finally got broadband (well, my line activated.) Recieved the BT "Gamers" package including the Speedtouch 530 USB/Ethernet modem.

One problem. The bloody Speedtouch 530 driver cd is a dud. So Im left fuming, with a day taken off to install, and stuck on a 56k line.

Anyone have any idea what I can do? I phoned BT ... "Your replacement cd should arrive within 2 weeks." No thanks guys... Cant find any drivers anywhere !!

That is only ISDN drivers, ie. they will not do what Im wanting to do....

my Speectouch when installed mentions a ISDN connection in the DUN, yet its not, so if you are willing to give it a go, i'd try using the ISDN drivers.

I think they have been lazy and adapted the ISDN ones to work with ADSL

You dont need USB drivers if you have an Ethernet port. Just connect your PC to the back of the router, turn the router on and wait to see if the lights go solid green (sync and connect to the exchange). If it does go into IE (with no connection) and type 127.0.0.1 or 10.0.0.100 or 10.0.0.138. I cant remember which the Speedtouch uses off the top of my head. Anyway, this will go into the routers interface. Just go to connect and put in your BT username and password then let the router connect. Now you *should* be connected to the intramanet.

You *might* have to go to Advanced then add your PCs NIC IP to the routing table. Add the IP and put it as eth0 if it's in the 1st ethernet port (which it should be i guess). Also, depending on how you're setup now you may need to change your network settings to Obtain IP automatically and then turn on DHCP in the speedtouch's advanced settings.

Anyway, thats how you do it manually. I'm guessing the CD comes with a hundred install wizards though. The Speedtouch webpage has a driver for your USB part - doubt it will have all the installation stuff though.

I need to do use the speedtouch via USB so I can use the Ethernet for Xbox/PS2...

I downloaded the USB drivers, but I cant seem to use the wizard to connect to BT broadband.. in the manual they show a pic of you inputting your username/pass into a "PPPoA Service" - "specify the details of the PPP over ATM service. Most values are correct by default".

However, I can only select from "World" settings, and then Basic and advanced... none of which give me the option to go for PPPoA, only PPPoE...

                      Anyone any wisdom?

If you're using internet explorer, all you need to do is set it up as a dial-up connection, make sure your Speedtouch is selected as the connection device, stick 0,38 in as the dial up number (that's what BT recommend although in reality any old **** will do), and it should be plain sailing.

Do you need to use USB to set it up or can you use a browser over ethernet? And can you do both USB & ethernet at the same time with one of those modems? Isn't it either/or?

Hey there, need to use USB to set it up. It connects via USB and has an ethernet socket so you can use Xbox Live/PS2 online.

The disc supplied with the proper Speedtouch drivers including a setup for BT broadband was completely ruined. They are sending me out another disc, should probably be here monday...

Bloody problems all the time... /grumpy

For now why not set it up for use via ethernet then when you want to play live connect the Xbox directly do it.

Ok, it's not the ideal solution but you'll get a weekend of gaming out of it.

(the ideal solution would be a router but that's a story for another day)
