    RGB vs Composite.

For a bit of fun I did an RGB vs composite comparison on another site. Everyone here should know it but I will post it up anyway.

First up is Gran Turismo 3 on PS2 in 60hz.

    Composite.

    RGB.

Firs thing to notice is with the GT flag. Lots of bleeding via composite, same with the Nissan logos at the sides. Scan lines are more visible via RGB and in this shot it looks more pixellated but in reality it isn't at all.

    Composite.

    RGB.

Main thing to notice here is how clean the lines of the car are. Also the reading in completely blurred at the bottom of the car when not using RGB. Again in real life, composite looks far worse.

    Composite.

    RGB.

Perhaps the most profound difference yet. The menu icons are horrendous via composite.

With the PS2 using an interlaced image like all machines of that era with RGB, time to show some 16bit stuff that uses 240p.

Super Street Fighter II at 60hz.

    Composite.

    RGB.

Red is the worst colour as you can see. Via composite the whole game has a reddish hue. Ken's clothes bleed rather a lot.

    Composite.

    RGB.

Again the red looks terrible. RGB might look like it lacks colour but in real life it is very bright and clear.

All pictures taken with a phone camera I'm afraid. Did my best.

That's mad I always knew there was night & day difference but seeing it like that is bonkers.
Ken look like he just blends into one colour on Composite

I do similar things to my parents when they say they can't see the difference between a HD & SD broadcast I flick backwards & forwards between Sky Sports HD & the SD version & nearly want to punch them in the face when they say they still can't see it!!

    Good work...now do some more

Oh & I don't know of this other site BTW! are you whoring yourself out now to other sites?? how dare you!!

Worth noting that the PS2 has particularly bad composite.

For me the easiest bit to notice is the "position = 6th" counter top left and the lap time stuff (in the GT shots) - just dreadful in compo****e.

            Not always!

AV Famicom and PC Engine composite looks pretty good. Of course, RGB still looks better but it's still much much better than can be seen from other machines.

I prefer composite with PC Engine myself. RGB is too defined. It looks fake.
              Kept you waiting, huh?

PC Engine looks more natural in composite IMO.

I dont get how people can think the Pc Engine looks better in composite over RGB. How can it? How can all those sexy arcade conversions look more natural in compromised composite over the original arcade RGB version? I used to have arguments with my mate who used to work in 'Dixsons' selling electronics. He was convinced that S-Video was the best possible CRT image you can get, even better than RGB scart. His argument was "how come only expensive tv's have S-Video, then?"

Years of bloody 8-bit and early Megadrive through ****ty RF and composite has made me bitter towards it. My mother had an RGB scart tv in her bedroom that I always tried to talk her into swapping for my 50htz composite TV but she wouldn't budge for years until 91' when she finally gave in. Never again!

PC-Engine has passable composite, but an RGB'd system is awesome, why hide how detailed the games are?

                      Via crt -

                      Via monitor -

                      Superb for an 8-bit.

The quality of Composite video is heavily down to the TV and video processing, as well as the video encoder in the console. It can actually look good. No reason to use it now, of course.

I remember first hooking up my Ps2 via the Ixos component cable on my 36" tosh CRT. Best ?40 I ever spent. Just wish my family didnt throw the bugger out whilst I was on holiday. Id've made room for it somewhere, got it calibrated and chucked an rgb'd snes, DC and N64 on it given the chance. Would've been better if it wasnt widescreen but hey ho.

My cousin in Pakistan thought he was seeing his new Ps3 in HD via his Bravia using composite. I slapped him hard and made him buy a HDMI cable. Jeez! I have NEVER seen composite look good, its the go to cable when you have NOTHING ELSE!

It would help if Sony bundled a HDMI cable, given that HD is the whole focus of the console. Playing devil's advocate for a moment, most people don't really understand how these things work to the same extent that we do, most people (not unreasonably) assume that everything required to use a HD console in HD would be included in the box. A HDMI cable should be bundled to avoid these kinds of mistakes.
