Optimised PAL games on an NTSC-J Saturn?

    Hi folks

Seems like quite a few of us on here are catching Saturn fever. I've got my eye on a couple of JPN systems, but I'd like to play the Panzer Dragoon games in English. PD and PD Zwei are both optimised for PAL from what I've read, so how will these deal with being played via an Action Reply on a JPN machine? I'm assuming I'd need a 50/60Hz switch fitted?

I could always get the NTSC-U versions of both of course, but they seem to be at least twice the price on Ebay

    Thanks!

I seriously doubt PD1 will be optimised, though I'm sure Zwei is (that came with the wave of games such as VF2 and Rally, which were).

Ah OK. It is according to this list:

Sega Saturn UK - A site founded in 2007, dedicated to bringing the Sega Saturn community togeather in an informal and friendly online community.

I don't know how reliable that is though.

Meh, I'm prepared to accept I'm wrong. I just find it hard to believe that a launch game would be optimised like that, when Daytona USA and Virtua Fighter weren't.

          I know Sega Rally was.

Yup. Sega Rally Turbo Mode is a real thing.

That site I'm about 99% certain rips off me and my brother's list we created here:

Our sites lists the problems PAL game encounter at 60hz, it's somewhat out of date and I need to update it but we are now looking to video every game in 50hz & 60hz. There are also a few more games that I know are optimised that we haven't yet add to our list and there not marked as optimised on their list..........

Don't know if NTSC Saturns can have a 50/60hz switch added, I would advise however you only buy NTSC versions for a NTSC console.

As many PAL optimised versions suffer from serious overscan others feature mass graphic corruption and are totally unplayable at 60hz.

If you have any questions wakka about any games let me know, me & my brother are the official experts on this subject.

But in regards to the posts above, Panzer Dragoon One & Sega Rally were both optimised. Panzer Dragoon Saga was the only PD game thankfully not to be optimised.

Interesting, thank you S3M. Very thorough list there. If I get a JPN machine guess I'll have to stick to NTSC-U versions of the first two PD games. I wouldn't actually bother trying to get a switch fitted anyway most likely (unless I got a PAL unit).

Yeah, that's true - if you played Sega Rally (PAL) on a Japanese machine you'd lose part of the screen. The UK version wasn't just sped up to account for the 50/60 difference, it was also made slightly higher res to use the entire screen.

                    It is playable though.

That's fine, I'd pick up a JPN Sega Rally anyway. Nice small boxes...

Do Panzer Dragoon and Zwei even need to be in English? Never really found it a problem playing them in Japanese. Of course, Saga is a different matter.

I doubt it...but I want to get the story for when I play Saga.

PAL copy in an NTSC machine.
