I really wouldn't worry about this; being a 32-bit rail shooter, whilst both games build an amazing world in their visuals, the stories aren't a big feature - and the parts which are present often have no dialogue (if I remember correctly, PD1 doesn't have any dialogue).

Orta is comparably full of speech.

I'm pretty sure it has subtitles in places for the story on the USA and UK releases.

        Fond memories

Just remember to pick up the Japanese Plus edition of Sega Rally as it includes analog controls support not in the PAL version and all the extras (staff ghosts) found in the PAL version.

For Sega Rally Championship on the Saturn, GameFAQs hosts box shots and screenshots, as well as videos from GameSpot and submitted by users.

Playing a PAL copy of Sega Rally is a mess due to all the overscan, it does work and you get a turbo boost, but there may be other issues later in only played it for 5 minutes and I don't think speedy really understands how badly messed up some of the PAL games are at 60HZ.

Guardian Heroes, Wing Arms & Virtual On are three of the worse as the colours blur in a really strange warping effect.

Some games do just have overscan but I have never playthrough all of them at 60hz to find if there are other issues with them. Deep Fear for example has a strange green line at the top of the screen but is also supposed to crash late on into the game.

Oh and While I mention it two games that you should play at 60hz are the PAL versions of Crimewave & Resident Evil. In Resident Evil's case the game randomly crashes at 50hz during the opening door cutscenes and Crimewave has a bug which means that the game doesn't play the music at 50hz.

Another reason you don't want the PAL releases of some games is that they removed content for the PAL version. X-Men COTA & Marvel Super Heroes both have a secret character removed from the Japanese release as does Athlete Kings. Last Bronx had the training mode pulled and the difficulty made so hard the CPU is insane and Winter Heat had a event history and information section pulled from it.

I should also point out Wakka that when we get around to updating that list it will only be missing 7-8 games on it.

Good shout on the Plus edition of SR, I wasn't aware of that.

As regards the other titles, I think I'm just going to play everything at 60Hz to be on the safe side, and to know that I'm getting the best version. I'll be focusing on NTSC-J releases except for those games where I'd like to understand the story (there aren't an enormous number of those fortunately).

Would you believe, I used to own a copy of Deep Fear. And I sold it for ?20. Oops.

I knew Akuma wasn't present in the PAL Marvel games, but who's missing from Athlete Kings?

                Was it Pepsiman?

Asura you may want to read up more on the Sega Saturn as your post is very incorrect.

Akuma is playable in the PAL version of X-Men COTA he's actually has his Japanese name of Gouki in the PAL release, but the Juggernaut cheat code was removed. Anita was only playable in the Japanese release of Marvel Super Heroes.

Pepsiman comes from Fighting Viper, but he was removed from the PAL release and that's another game to get a Japanese copy of.

There was a Japanese Athlete who was a secret character in Athlete Kings who was removed, his voice effects are however still present in the PAL version of AK sound test. Oh and that reminds me Jeff from Athlete Kings was a secret character in Winter Heat and you guessed it he was removed from the PAL version.

I have both the PAL & Japanese NTSC versions of all the mention games and it makes for some interesting comparisons, should do a video on the subject once I source an S-Video lead for the Saturn

If Akuma's in the PAL X-Men COTA, is his code different to the Japanese one? As I'm sure I remember Sega Saturn Mag at the time lamenting that he'd been removed.

Nope it's the same code as the arcade version, SSM complained about the fact that Juggernaut had been removed from the PAL release. Still have quite a few back issue of it.

OT but does anyone else find that some Japanese Saturn games are less optimised than their Western versions?

It's been a while but I remember my US and UK copies of NiGHTS were smoother than my Japanese one, which would suffer slowdown in certain spots.

My Japanese copy of Fighting Vipers got a bit jerky at times compared with my US copy as well(although Pepsi Man is fun). In fact, my UK copy also didn't have as much slowdown as the Japanese one(although I think the game is slower overall due to 50Hz).

Maybe they had more time to optimise due to later release dates? Or maybe I dunno what I'm on about?

You would be right randombs a number of western versions did have improvement as did the Japanese on others. I know the Japanese version of Fighters Megamix had more bugs in it that were fixed for the western release. Pal version of Sega Rally had a number of extra not found in the original Japanese release, hence why they did the plus edition in Japan.

Truth be told there isn't much information on the subject however and the sad fact is that while some of the PAL version where improved many suffered due to 50hz.

I'll admit I do have US Sega Rally at home. I think it's apparently worse than the Japanese one but can't remember why exactly(ghost cars?). Anyway, good to know I'm not going mad!

I seem to remember magazines commenting that Japanese games were often more buggy or prone to slowdown back in the day. Something about the Japanese not being as bothered about technical proficiency.

I think it's just because they were first to be released.
